That was suppossed to be landing gear use for the B-36 (and the single transport version produced) to replace the large single wheel to allow the bomber to land at thinner runways or perhaps rough runways as well...

It was not put into production. Multi-wheeled landing gear was used instead.

Correct, to vastly increase the number of landing sites. It, errr, ummm, didn't work out lol.

Yeah, not only did it weigh to much ( MUCH to much!) but it also self destructed during testing!
