Manoj: I'm not sure exactly how I found that article. I think it was by following a link someone posted somewhere.
Cent: This is why I plan to make
Aircraft Resource an
ECM Resource. To get all this data in one place.
Ken Duffey has some tailboom pics which may provide clues:
http://www.duffeyk.fsnet.co.uk/tailbooms.htmAnd Venik's Aviation (basically Jane's articles) says this:
Su-27:
Quote:
Three banks of APP-50 chaff/flare dispensers (total 96 cartridges) in bottom of long tailcone extension and top of tailsting. Tailcone widened to provide extra chaff/flare dispensers from batch 18 (mid-1987).
Su-33:
Quote:
Self-defence: As Su-27, but with reduced number of chaff/flare dispensers (24 per side).
I don't know exactly how many the widened 1987 boom adds, maybe the 96 is the later number. In Flanker 2.5 the aircraft carries 51 chaff and 51 flares, but I think the Su-33 carries that same number when it should be reduced.
Here's nine holes on the side of a Su-27 boom:

Also you don't often see this bird's nose open, I think its interesting:
