There were two shoot-downs actually. There was KAL 007 which was South Korean Airlines, which they "mistook" for a US RC-135. They also shot down another civie airliner with the Su-15. These incidents were in 1980 and 1983, with the latter being KAL 007 IIRC.

IIRC they also shot an airliner down in the 70s, it managed to land on a frozen lake or something.

The U-2 shootdown was quite a wierd case. The U-2 flies pretty high but apparently Gary Powers wasn't high enough. He was shot down by an SA-2, which the Russians didn't even realize could reach as high as it did so neither did we. Unfortunately Powers went off course and came within range of a SAM site. The Russians also shot down one of their own MiG-15s sent to intercept Powers. Powers also managed to survive an eject from over 60,000 feet and as we know did not take the cynaide capsul he was supposed to take so in essence he fucked up big time. Secondly the wondrous Soviet Union was most likely tipped off as to his course and such.

Actually it was several MiG-17s that were shot down.. THe MiG-15 had no where near teh performance to get anywhere near the U-2...

You can not trust FAS.org to show correct pics of any aircraft...

Hell they have pics of the Eurofighter and are calling it the J-10!

and that other pic on FAS of the J8 is actually a JH-7!

The other aircraft in question is indeed a J-6. I have seen that pic before. Plus the telltale cannons in the wing roots...

Well who can really blame him for the last part, I mean taking your life with your own hands is something no one wants to even dream about (unless they're a depressed suicidal dipshit).

Whatever happened to Powers anyway? I know he was put in prison after a mock trial, but I don't remember very much after that.....

actually the U-2 didnt go off course. The U-2s autopilot failed. At that altitude the speed differance between mach 1 (which would buffet the U-2 and destroy it) and the U-2s stall speed is just a few knots, Powers had to descend to denser air just to fly the thing without breaking up or stalling out. THAT's when the SAMs were able to get him(of course without the autopilot working he may have gotten closer to a SAM site than he was aware of I dont know).

btw before the Powers incident, the guys who flew the Dragon Lady were never convinced that the ejection seat actually worked, they figured it just triggered an auto destruct system.

Powers was exchanged with a Soviet spy at Checkpoint Charlie in West Berlin a year(?) later...

under orders Powers was supposed to take the cynide pill. It wasn't a question of choice or depression, it was orders.

And everywhere I read it was a MiG-15, actually Cag I didn't know FAS had a write-up about the U-2 incident.

If it ever came down to it, how willing would you be to knowingly take your own life? I don't care who orders you to do it, it's still an extremely hard decision to make.

Franly I would never place myself in a position where I would accept an order like that. Now I am not talking about dying in a hopeless combat situation, because there you are fighting for your friends in the foxhole with you and yourself.... But chomping down on a cynaide pill, I just wouldnt do it.

But then again I would never fly the Dragon Lady... It just isnt my thing, and those pilots were all CIA volunteers... So when you take into account the training received and the mission as briefed, then he did do a major violation by not taking the capsule... He, however, also did fail even a larger requirement... He did not flip on the self destruct mechanism onboard the U-2 before he ejected. Therefore the Russians had quite alot of intact equipment to use against the US and to research...

And Cent, I never did say anything about the shootdown being on FAS, I was ust saying that FAS is unreliable. I obtain the information about the Fresco shootdowns from released Russian Airforce documents that were made public on the History and discovery channels last year...
