Actually their most effective, for kills, was the F-8 and the F-4...

The F-14 has had very few (5 total) kills, and the F/A-18 only has 2...

I still wouldn't put my money on an F-4 if it went up against an F-14.

Well... It depends on the version and the weapons it carried... in medium BVR combat they would most likely both be armed with the same version of the Sparrow and sidewinders...

The F-14s radar would be superior and its close range WVR maneuverability would be superior, but a better trained pilot in the Phantom would always kill the Tomcat...
