The latest images indicated that the #2013 prototype took off for the first time on November 29, 2014, and the #2015 prototype on December 19, 2014, both with the pitot tube removed from the nose. The relatively fast pace of two aircraft being rolled out within one month suggested that the J-20 program is moving towards the low-rate initial production by 2016.

A recent rumor (March 2015) claimed that one J-20 prototype was handed over to PLAAF for its own evaluation.
The latest rumor (April 2015) suggested that the #2015 prototype just flew to CFTE for further testing, which might include
integration of various weapons.

Sorry to tell you (not really) that this aircraft is already trackable on radar according to Janes Defense... Better luck next time.

Recent images (September 2015) confirmed that the #2016 prototype had been constructed and was undergoing taxi test in preparation of its maiden flight. The aircraft appears to feature slightly reshaped DSI bumps as well as dark engine nozzles. The #2016 prototype made its first flight on September 18, 2015. The aircraft was transferred to CFTE for further testing on December 2, 2015. The last prototype (#2017) had its maiden flight on November 24, 2015 before the initial production started in late 2015. The aircraft appears to feature a slightly reshaped canopy. The latest images (December 2015) indicated that a new J-20 in yellow primer (#2019 later renumbered as #2101) was built which is likely to be the first of the two LRIP models. High speed taxi tests already took place. First flight is expected in January 2016.

Still trackable due to forward canards. The Chinese should delete these to make this aircraft frontal stealth effective.

China’s J-20 Stealth Fighter Shows Off New Camouflage

More LRIP J-20s are being built in 2016, at least 4 (2101-2104?) by mid-2016, wearing a gray color scheme and low-visibility PLAAF insignias. The aircraft appears to have 4 hardpoints underneath the wings for external payloads such as PL-10/PL-12 AAMs and fuel tanks. They can be carried during routine air patrols in peacetime. The pylons can be jettisoned in case of an emergency situation and the aircraft will turn into the stealthy combat mode. In the meantime J-20 prototypes have been undergoing weapon launch tests including lunching PL-15 AAMs. The latest images (September 2016) indicated that new LRIP J-20s are being built without any visible serial numbers. The first batch is expected to enter the service with PLAAF by the end of 2016 (S/N 78xxx & 4xx4x). The latest image (October 2016) indicated that at least one LRIP aircraft is wearing a new splinter camouflage similar to that of Russian T-50 (for demonstration purpose at the Zhuhai Airshow in November?). In addition test flights were flown by a prototype at CFTE carrying 4 external fuel tanks.

Doesnt matter what color it is... The front canards make it easily tracked. Bad Stealth Design.

China’s J-20 Stealth Fighter to Challenge F-22 Raptor Supremacy

The state-of-the-art J-20 fifth-generation jet fighter is a key part of the Chinese air force. According to Chinese military expert, Li Li, the J-20 could possibly break the US monopoly on fourth-generation fighters.

During an interview with CCTV, the military expert said that the Chinese jet fighter may exert an even bigger influence than the American F-22 Raptor.

Li Li further said that although the American F-22 Raptor is the first fourth-generation fighter commissioned in an air force, its performance is not satisfactory. She said that the J-20 and Russia’s T-50 will possibly manage to break the Western monopoly and that the J-20 could have a more significant influence than its Western counterparts. Chinese officials maintain that the J-20 will be exclusive to the People’s Liberation Army Air Force.

Although the full specifications of the Chinese fighter are not yet publicly known, some observers expect that the J-20s will be able to match the stealth, radar-evading properties of the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, developed for the US Air Force. The US F-22 stealth fighter is expected to be deployed in the Pacific by the United States.

Earlier last month, the deputy editor of Russian military magazine "Arsenal of the Fatherland" Dmitry Drozdenko told Sputnik that China's J-20 stealth fighter jet also was said to bear similarities to an experimental prototype for a fifth-generation fighter jet produced by Russia's MiG aircraft corporation.

“In my opinion, the machine is based on the Russian MiG 1.44. That plane was created to compete with the PAK FA at the preliminary design stage, and made its maiden flight in 2000. The Chinese plane is very similar. Although it hasn't been announced officially, the J-20 uses our AL-31F engine, developed by Salut, which the Chinese bought for half a billion dollars," he revealed.

The MiG aircraft corporation began to design a fifth-generation Multirole Tactical Fighter in 1983, in response to US efforts to develop an Advanced Tactical Fighter, which eventually materialized as the F-22.

Drozdenko is not the first analyst to note the similarity between the MiG 1.44 and the Chengdu J-20, photographs of which began circulating in 2010. Comparing the two fifth-generation prototypes, Defense Aviation spotted "startling similarities between the Chinese J-20 and the canceled Russian MiG-1.44." As a stealth fighter, the J-20 is not as optimized for combat as the MiG 1.44, but both planes "have similarly styled delta wing canard configurations and a V-Shaped tail section with closely mounted engines," analyst Cavin Dsouza wrote.

Yea sure... Challenge an aircraft that has all round stealth with a frontal stealth only aircraft... You are such a nitwit.

Currently at least 6 J-20s are in service with PLAAF Dingxin Flight Test & Training Base. A recent rumor (March 2017) suggested that J-20 is preparing for the integration of the new WS-15 turbofan engine. The latest image (September 2017) indicated that since early 2017 a J-20A prototype (#2021) has been fitted with two indigenous WS-10X turbofan engines (based on WS-10B, 13t class?) featuring stealth nozzles with saw tooth edges, suggesting that Chinese have finally developed a comparable engine to replace its Russian counterpart. First flight of J-20A took place on September 19, 2017. The latest rumor (September 2017) claimed that J-20 has been selected by PLAN as its first land-based stealth fighter (J-20H?) but this has not been confirmed.

Its cockpit might have also been upgraded with a large 24x9" touchscreen panoramic cockpit display (PCD) controlled by voice commands similar to that of F-35 plus a smaller LCD between the legs. As the result a side-stick and the throttle are expected to be installed to control the aircraft. The combination of AESA radar, EODAS, IRST, advanced cockpit design and HMD further improves pilot's situation awareness by providing the highest degree of "information fusion". The emergence of IRST suggests that J-20 might possess a limited AG capability using laser or TV guided PGMs. In addition it has numerous aerodynamic refinements including reshaped tailfins, extended tail booms, nose landing gear door, LERX and engine intakes with two hexagonal inlet/outlet of the fuel-air heat exchanger as well as smaller underwing actuators to further reduce RCS. Two side-looking radar antennas may have been installed underneath the elongated hexagonal dielectric fairings (in X & Y directions) on each side of the nose, which provide a better situation awareness and extended missile guidance during the dogfight. Two large tail booms appear to house additional ECM or rear-view radar antennas to protect the rear hemisphere of the aircraft. A new ECM antenna can be seen aft the air intake as well.

3-D Simulation of China’s New J-20 Stealth Fighter Shows Design Capabilities

The People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s (PLAAF) recently commissioned J-20 will dramatically improve China’s ability to project power in the Asia-Pacific region, but it still has some weaknesses that could make it vulnerable to enemy radar detection, according to a new US think tank report.

The Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) has published a simulated 3-D view of the J-20 stealth fighter in tandem with researchers from Air Power Australia, another think tank.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1NEg_8uMHk

According to the researchers, the jet has highly advanced radars, sensors and avionics similar to the US’ F-35 and F-22 stealth fighters.

The jet has "achieved some low observable goals for enhanced stealth," according to the December 12 CSIS report, allowing the J-20 "to bypass radar and electronic countermeasures with low to zero visibility."

Nevertheless, jet's spherical nozzle design, set between the two Russian AL-31 engines in the plane's rear and the cockpit, "may work against its stealth capabilities," CSIS states. Keeping weapons attached externally to its wings as opposed to stored inside weapons bays will also make the plane less stealthy, analysts say.

Much of the data about the J-20 remains crude and estimated, but will be updated as new details roll in, CSIS notes.

One possibility is that China is planning to make the aircraft stealthier over time. While CSIS estimates about 11 J-20s have been produced so far, some are believed to feature AL-31 engines while others may be powered by domestically produced WS-10 engines. Future J-20s will be powered by WS-15 engines, which are likely to improve the jet's rear-end radar signature while providing continuous supersonic travel capability, or "super cruise," which European, Russian and US fighters have already implemented. The ability to "super cruise" makes the jet harder to detect, as it doesn't require afterburners to reach supersonic speeds.

Once the J-20 became operational in late September, it achieved the status predicted by the US Naval War College in 2014 — that once operational, the J-20 would "immediately become the most advanced aircraft deployed by any East Asian Power."

The PLAAF's experience with the J-20 is thought to provide China with a significant edge over India, Japan and South Korea, which all plan to design and produce their own fifth-generation fighters but remain years away from putting such jets into service.

Analysts have yet to conclude whether the J-20 will be most effective in an air superiority role or as an air-to-ground strike fighter. One of the most important factors in determining what the plane will best be suited for — though the PLAAF maintains the jet will be a multi-role fighter — consists in what types of missions PLAAF pilots are trained in, CSIS notes.

The first two J-20s was rumored to have entered the service with the PLAAF 9th Brigade on January 13, 2019, facing Japan and Taiwan (S/N 62x0x). The satellite image indicated at least 3 were present in early March 2019. The latest image (October 2019) suggested that J-20A powered by the indigenous WS-10C turbofan with a serrated (sawtooth) nozzle design is in production. The latest rumor (September 2019) claimed that J-20 was ready to test the newly integrated WS-15 turbofan engine.

This reminds me of the Soviet's Mig 25.
It was supposed to fly higher, faster and clear the sky of Allied fighters, until we got one from a defector.
It was not made of space age metal, but steel!

The Pacific Airforce has F 22 Raptors that should do a good job on these Chinese copies.

Best Regards,
Pappy

Decidedly the Russians are bad luck for you.
The MiG-25 was built to intercept American bombers, especially the XB-70 Valkyrie and be a reconnaissance aircraft.
In 1960, the Soviets became aware of the development, by the American firm North American, of a high-altitude bomber capable of flying at Mach 3: the XB-70 Valkyrie. In order to counter this threat, the leaders of the USSR decide to launch the study of a trisonic interceptor for their air force. The program was formalized in February 1962 as Ye-155.
Its first flight was made on March 6, 1964 for commissioning in 1972.

Good luck for the full annexation of the Pacific
