Not really Cent... In the early 1960s the active ICBM was the Atlas and Titan I, both of which were stored unfueled and had to be erected to the launch pad, fueled and then fired...

The Bombers took hours to reach their targets in the Soviet Union... So it woudl still take quite a while to end the world then... alot longer then the 15 to 30 minutes it takes today...

I get a good laugh out of how people like to portray Generals, especially American and Soviet Generals during the Cold War. If it were up to the flower children and Hollywood then everyone would beleive that people in the armed forces - Generals especially - were just a bunch of war mongers praying every night that they'd get to launch a nuke. That's exactly the opposite of what these people are all about.

I think that Daniel James Jr. - a military analyst - said it best with, "Nobody dislikes war more than warriors."

There are Admirals and Generals, such as the Commander in Chief of NORAD and the Admiral of CINCLANTFLT that are specially trained to know how to keep the President calm in a situation. That is because the hot heads the world has to worry about the most are the elected officials, who are not trained to deal with war none the less a nuclear war.

The President of the United States does not even participate in war games, for fear that the way he reacted to certain situations would get out. This is a very good reason for the simple fact that enemy nations and enemy terrorist groups/factions could use it as an advantedge against the United States in a war, especially one that involves NBC weapons.

Unlike what a lot of books and movies portray, it's not the elected officials keeping the Generals and Admirals calm. It's the Generals and Admirals keeping the elected officials calm before they do something that could just make the situation worse.

That is alot closer to the truth.... However I believe that 'Command Authority', made up of both military and civilian leaders, tend to balance each other...
