This gun kill picture is from the HUD recorder of a VFA-11 Super Hornet taken during a Red Air exercise. The black box on the top left is an event marker to show that the trigger was squeezed.

This is shocking to me, and if you notice, the pilots of super hornet were at 20 to 18 AoA while keeping airspeed increasing steady while keeping gunsight over Raptor, but still, I say if Super Hornet have missed target, then Raptor would suddenly snap into very high AoA and fire at Super Hornet, judging from the picture. But at the same time, it also looks like Super Hornet pilots have bled so much of airspeed, thus losing dogfight energies which slipped pilots of super hornet into nasty disadvantage if they have missed Raptor in gun firing mode. These Navy pilot must have guts going against new next generation of stealth fighter of USAF.

GO NAVY!!!

However, I am open for anyone with vast experience of aerial dogfights to post their thought/feeling about these pictures of Raptor getting 'shot down' by these super hornet pilots.

:)

Eagle out...

This has appeared elswhere and I wrote a long explanation of what you see in the HUD pics.
The capabilities of the Hornets have always been vastly underated by those who can only see things like max G capabilities and maximum speed. Neither of which mean much in a fight. Why can F-14 and F-15 reach well beyond Mach two, while the newer F-16 and F-18 cannot? Because it isnt needed and giving a plane that capability adds weight and complexity ( primarily in the engine inlet design ). 14s and 15s can only do Mach 2 for a short time and only then while carrying vitually no weapons and not much fuel. So newer fighter planes are designed to fight well, not just go faster and higher.
The Hornet and Super Hornet are the only planes capable of reproducing Fulcrum threat capabilities and are being used for dissimilar combat training for the F-22. Only the Hornets can produce the low speed degrees per second turn rates of the Fulcrum family, not Eagles, not Vipers.
If I remember right it appeared to me that the 22 tried to out-loop a SH only to find out that at low speed at the top of the loop a Hornet ( super or otherwise ) can just snap it's nose around and point it's gun at virtually anything it wants to.
This is what dissimilar training is all about, trying an "oopsie" and learning that it was a bad idea and to not try it again.

Hornet and others use a "director gunsight" it shows where the bullets will go, not where the gun is pointed. The reticle shows a low percentage shot but it IS there and I dont think the Raptor pilot would feel comfortable about it.

CAG

You said the Hornet had a low chance of a gun kill. Would that be also indicated by the cross through the gun on the HUD and the 0?

I hope this isn't a dumb question.

Pappy
