the stop-rotor wing goes back a long way and I never believed it would work.

Yup, that was a 4 bladed rotor, when stopped it would have two rotors trailing like a swept wing and two rotors leading like a forward swept wing. It relied on aero-elastic tailoring like the X-29 to keep the forward rotors from bending and twisting right off. Had wings like the old Cheyenne attack chopper to help off-load lift forces from the stopped rotor.
