Russia has apparently confirmed that it has had a Su-25 and "Tu-22" (has to be a Backfire) shot down over South Ossetia (or maybe they were even over Georgia). When is the last time prior to this that a strategic bomber was shot down? I know all three of the US bombers have had incidents lately but they were not hostile fire related. I would guess it was when some Iraqi Tu-22s were shot down by Iran during the 1980s. Zephyr |

Were Iraqi fighters ever successful in shooting down any B-52s in the first Gulf War? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but you never know... |

During Desert Storm one B-52G was lost over the Indian Ocean due to mechanical problems, but no losses due to enemy activity. http://www.faqs.org/docs/air/avb52_2.html#m4 Zephyr |

Also during Desert Storm a B-52 was stuck by a AGM-88 HARM missile accidently fired against the tail gun radar of the bomber by a F-4G Wild Weasel. The bomber was damaged, but not downed... |
