Post subject: | PLA to buy advanced S-400 missile system from Russia |
The deployment of the Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile system will substantially improve China's air defense capability, military experts said as Russian media reported that China has bought the cutting-edge weapon. "The S-400 is definitely one of the top anti-aircraft weapons in the world. It will greatly supplement the People's Liberation Army's air defense system, which now has some loopholes in long-range, high-altitude defense of airplanes or ballistic missiles," said Wang Ya'nan, deputy editor-in-chief of Aerospace Knowledge magazine. "The system has multiple types of missiles with various ranges, enabling it to safeguard a very large area of airspace. Some of its missiles are even specifically designed to intercept ballistic missiles," Wang said. "Moreover, some of its launch tubes can store and launch several different missiles, which makes it very convenient and fast to use." Russia has a long history of developing anti-aircraft and missile defense weapons, so the S-400 is a concentration of some of the most advanced missile technologies Russia has, such as an active electronically scanned array radar, according to Wang. "China still lacks experience in the development of long-range air defense systems, especially those that can intercept ballistic missiles. There is no shortcut because the development of such sophisticated weapons requires a great number of experiments and tests. It is a matter of time and resource input," he added. According to Russian media reports, the S-400 is a new-generation, anti-aircraft weapon system capable of engaging any aerial target, including airplanes, helicopters and drones, as well as cruise and tactical ballistic missiles, with a maximum speed of 4.8 km per second. The system's 40N6 missile can destroy airborne targets at ranges up to 400 km. Anatoly Isaikin, chief executive of the Russian state-run arms trader Rosoboronexport, confirmed on Monday that China has a contract with his company for the purchase of the S-400 air defense systems. "I will not disclose the details of the contract, but yes, China has indeed become the first buyer of this sophisticated Russian air defense system. It underlines once again the strategic level of our relations," Isaikin told the Russian newspaper Kommersant. China clinched the deal in September at a cost of more than $3 billion for the delivery of at least six S-400 battalions, Moscow Times reported. Currently, China relies on its domestically developed HQ-9 and the Russian-made S-300 missile system, according to Western military observers. Du Wenlong, a senior researcher at the PLA Academy of Military Science, said the operational ranges of modern military aircraft and missiles are much longer than their predecessors, so an effective defense system must have long-range missiles that can hit aircraft as well as cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles. "Our air force has deployed the Russian S-300 systems, which are good at dealing with aircraft, but their performance in intercepting cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles is not very satisfactory," he said. "After we commission the S-400, it can work with the HQ-9 and S-300 to form a fully covered air defense network." Zhao Zhihua, a senior missile researcher at China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp, a major developer of China's missiles, said that through the introduction of the S-400, China can gain a lot of experience and expertise on how to operate a missile defense system. "Operating such a complex system will go beyond our current knowledge and experience, which in turn will teach us things that we don't know, so it is worthy spending big money buying it," he previously told the Ordnance Industry Science and Technology magazine. |

Very short term thinking on the part of Russia... They will wish they hadn't done this in the future when China expands northward... |

China is a strategic ally for Russia, both economic and geopolitic.I don't think that in the future China will attack Russia. There is also the S-500, its development will be completed in 2015, and the system could enter service by 2017 and the future S-1000 in preparation for the air defense of Russia. Remember that Russia and China are members of The Shanghai Cooperation Organization - SCO - an Eurasian political, economic and military organization founded in 2001 in Shanghai, the counterpart of NATO. |

It is naive to think that relationship with Russia would last in the face of the ever growing Chinese population and their expanding needs... Soon China will surpass Russia in to many ways to need the same relationship they have now. Each time Russia sells anything to China they lose out due to Chinese reverse engineering of the technology. Each time China takes a further step forward and one step close to no longer needing Russia... And here is a comparison from History... Russia and Germany were partners that occupied Poland. Russia had a strategic alliance with Germany in many many ways, providing raw materials, training, etc... They had a signed strategic non aggression pact signed in Moscow and Berlin... But none of that mattered when Germany decided they no longer needed the Russians and viewed them, instead, as a ripe target for attack. |

China is not Nazi Germany... Western economic sanctions against Russia, bad geopolitical strategy from the Government of the USA. Russian-Chinese alliance is a reality, day after day.Causes and consequences of stability requested for a multipolar world. |

I think Putin knows very well what he is doing if we see the interests that can provide the sale of S-400s at the strategic and geopolitical level to counter the influence of the USA in what is the concentration of the greatest assets of the world which is the Asian continent and to counter the advance of NATO to eastern Europe... |

I dont see how Russian selling anything to China counter influences the USA... We have never been a large seller of weapons to the Chinese and never will be. Its counter to our own interest to do that... In fact, China getting more advanced weapons just cements our position in the Fareast and the Pacific as our allies have to rely upon us even more. You really do have a limited understanding of geopolitics. China picks and chooses what it wants to meet its needs. It always has. Its non alignment is necessary to continue to meet its financial goals while holding onto power over the world's largest population... Russia, on the other hand, has always been very short sighted. They continue to repeat the same mistakes on the world stage that they always have. Their entire economy is in the trash and there is nothing that China can do to change that. Only Putin can when he wakes up to the fact that he cant invade other countries without risking losing his own ass over there... |

I was 15 when we were liberated from them and I know very well what it's been before. The Russians economy is totally ruined. Russia has nothing to offer for the world in addition to their natural resources or weapons. But anyone who produces weapons also need to sell them. Only China is ready for new technology and certainly pay better than Islamic fundamentalists. |

Russia is not and never will be the USSR. - THANKS TO GOD - A new "cold war" is looming with the NATO expansion in Eastern Europe. The "SCO" Shanghai Cooperation Organization has also been founded in 2002 after the annihilation by NATO in the former Yugoslavia in 1999. This instability is now in the western borders of Russia in Ukraine. But there is also the problem of the Caucasus within the Russian Federation. China also has its problems with the Xinjiang region with a large Muslim majority in the north-west. The best solution is to foment "color revolutions" not only as in former Yugoslavia and Ukraine but also in countries of the Middle East and Asia to counter the influence of the Russians and Chineses. This is a geopolitical matter as we can see like in Macedonia with South Stream project via Turkey meets political instability for supplying gas to Western Europe ... |

NATO expansion into Eastern Europe has occurred since the 1990's and continues due to ongoing Russian aggression. The Russian/Georgian War and the current Russian supported, and Russian assisted, attacks in Ukraine just underline this need. To put a hammer on further Russian expansion NATO should immediately include all those republics that have sought membership such as Ukraine, Georgia, and the former Yugoslav republics... Russian doesn't have the combat power to take on NATO and has only fought in Georgia and Ukraine because they are not NATO partners. If they were members now Putin would piss his pants before trying to attack them... The Russian Bear only has real teeth with nuclear power for deterrence... They cant afford anything else. Especially with their current economic conditions... And any country stupid or foolish enough to attack Russia directly wouldn't survive a nuclear strike, but then neither would the Russians survive a retaliatory strike back. |

The Russo-Chinese alliance becomes a nightmare for NATO and the Pentagon as well. Russia on the one hand can give good technology to the Chinese in terms of weaponry and energy resources it greatly needs. China will become the world's largest economy very soon and offers to help economically Russia through the new deal which is the BRICS to counter the World Bank and the IMF too dependent on american dollar. Besides Russia and China are trading them with their own currencies. Even Bill Gates Microsoft boss recommends investing in the Chinese yuan. China has nearly 25% of the debts of the USA .. We can see that there is an interdependence between the member countries of NATO and the new block of Eurasia that emerges with Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in economic terms. From a geopolitical point of view, Russia and China trust each other and are even agree to a multipolar world unlike a new world order that wants to impose by force the government and the Pentagon in USA by its armed wing that is NATO. |

The only nightmare is in your dreams... China's entire economy is tied up with its world wide trading partners... It cant afford to, nor will it even try to, go to war... China sees the world as a master chess match. They will not go to war again like they did in the 1950s when they were isolationist. They paid to heavy a price for that... I suggest you take a few classes on world economics so you can get a handle on what really makes the world go round instead of your out of date communist era dogma... |

Global economies are interdependent ... only the dollar loses more and more his ability to lead the world economy ... in favor of Chinese Yuan.Communism is history... Certainly you are unable to conceive that there is real market economies both in Russia and China .... But surely this is beyond your mind. |

Kid you are a fool... Grow up. You have done nothing on this forum but constantly prove you are a person of limited intelligence that cant even paste other people's articles into posts without lousing up the image links... Do you even know the state of the Russian economy? Its in still down across the board... oil prices came up, but production has been reduced and prices are again stagnant with a possibility of slipping downward... Quote: At the end of 2014 the rouble was in freefall. By the beginning of 2015, it was worth a third less against the dollar than six months previously... Quote: Russia Economic Outlook May 12, 2015 The Russian economy is struggling. GDP decelerated from a 0.9% increase in Q3 to a 0.4% expansion in Q4, and data at the outset of 2015 have thus far shown signs that the economy will experience an outright contraction in Q1. In March, industrial production declined for a second consecutive month and both exports and imports continued to contract at double-digit rates. Moreover, although the manufacturing and services PMIs improved in April—especially in services—the results continued to signal challenging business conditions in both sectors. Sanctions are being renewed and hard currency reserves are running low... Quote: BRUSSELS—The European Union is, in the coming weeks, looking to roll over its broad economic and targeted sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis until late January, according to a number of senior officials and diplomats. The continuation of the sanctions are part of an effort to maximize the bloc’s leverage in pushing the Kremlin to fully implement its side of the Minsk cease-fire agreement, the officials say. The decisions are likely to deepen tensions with the Kremlin, which had appeared to be hoping to split the EU over sanctions policy and was hoping the relative quiet in eastern Ukraine since the cease-fire accord was signed on Feb. 12 would encourage its friends in the bloc to at least lighten the measures. After weeks of debate, EU leaders agreed at a March summit that any easing of the economic sanctions, which expire at the end of July, “should be clearly linked to the complete implementation of the Minsk agreements, bearing in mind that this is only foreseen by 31 December 2015.” So where is that super power you were blabbing about? Nitwit... |
