Post subject: | Iranian AIM-23 Update |
Found out from an Iranian on ACIG.org...AIM-23 never reached service... Was supposed to be a replacement for the AIM-54 but just couldn't cut it. "This project did not enter service with the IRIAF it was started in 1987 or so as a replacement for the AIM-54. The missiles were upgraded for the A-A role and one or two Tomcats were modified to use them, the tests were said to be partly successful but not near the AIM-54 preformance the range was said to be between 70-90km or so, but not activ guided and such things. The tests were done to the 90's but this project could not replace the AIM-54 (Iran wanted already in the 80's the capabyletie to build the MIM-23 so it was planed that this AIM-23 would be at the end fully Iranian build). A other team which had the order to develope an other replacement for the AIM-54 did win at the end, with their refubished and upgraded AIM-54 program and also for this program it is planed to build the whole missile in Iran. The AIM-23 project is dead, I have forgotten the project name but it is not in service." |
