as most know a RAF Tornado was shot down by a patriot missile over kuwait. could anybody tell me why the RWR didn't tell the crew about the missile so they might have evaded or ejected.

The patriot does not use continuous wave guidance for its missiles. Thus it gives no launch warning. However the crew may not have been concerned when they saw the Patriot ID come up on their RWR for lock on as all aircraft are interrogated by Patriot batteries when they return to Kuwaiti airspace. However, once launched, the missile has its own active seeker which, when activated, triggers a cockpit warning on the RWR and an aurio alert. The Patriot is not effected by chaff and very little by ECM. Also distance to target could have quite alot to do with it, if the Tornado was close to the Patriot battery then there was very little time to do anything as it attains its maximum speed within a very short distance of launch, and reaction time is short, especially if egress out of Iraq was at very highspeed...
