With this, the AIM-9X, ASRAAM, and soon IRIS-T the close in fight looks set to be very dangerous. I wonder if the Russians are still really working on R-73 Archer improvements. I think the US needs to work on a new long range missile, AMRAAM size to compete against Meteor. Maybe the Raytheon FMRAAM or whatever design could be used. The thing is targeting of LO aircraft may be difficult at long ranges but improved AWACS (that Paul Revere plane?), satellites, or UAVs could lend a hand. "FMRAAM is a derivative of the AMRAAM - the Air to Air missile of choice. It is integrated into 6,000 of the world's combat aircraft, including the Eurofighter." o0o0o0o backwards compatible Zephyr |

Actually this is the Raytheon FMRAAM which lost to the EADs Meteor. But yes the Meteor now has no mid fins so it's back to its original configuration. Zephyr |
