I have found alot of information on this system on the net and in Janes, but all of it is old. Is this weapon still valid? Still entering into production?

Beats me. Didn't it go the same way as the AGM-137 TSSAM and not get released?

This is the latest information I have on this weapon...

However, the first two OT (Operational Test) flight tests in May 2003 failed, because of engine and launcher problems. The Air Force still hopes to achieve initial operational capability with the JASSM on the B-52 by September 2003, after which go-ahead for full-rate production could be given in November

Congress has stopped it temporarily, there are I think a few dozen examples left and they put the stop on it to scare the contractors into getting the qual control probs fixxed.

Tiny nick knack crap has been going wrong with the missles , warheads not arming (we been doing this for 100 years folks!!) a control actuator jamming etc and the gov wants it fixxed before it gets the full go ahead.

Since the Tommahawk/CALCM/ALCM aparantly cant penetrate SA-10 territory we pretty much have to have it eventually.

Really the SA-10 can shoot them suckers down? Wow I wonder where they got the PAC parts to accomplish that. Germany?

If you're referring to the Patriot missile by PAC, I don't think they needed any. Tomahawks aren't exactly stealthy, and IIRC some other Russian systems can shoot them down as well.

BTW If you've ever wondered about "real world" hit %, the JASSM hit 17 targts with fewer than 55 launches and the DOD was apparently thrilled enough to say they will need 50% fewer JASSMs than they thought!!

I don't know if this helps but I was watching a show on the History Channel earlier and they were discussing smart bombs and such. In it they mentioned the JASSM and mentioned it could loiter the battlefield, provide reconnaissance photo's, and strike its target when necessary and also be launched from something in the area of 70 miles away. They said it was nearing completion of tests and such and so I would assume that it is still a real idea. The show is up to date because they discussed Afghanistan and Iraq and some of the friendly fire incidents that occured with smart bombs. They showed pictures of targets decimated inside Iraq so it was also after the country fell to US forces so it is very recent.

might be "up to date" but dead wrong, JASSM has range in excess of 250 miles

Kap, doesnt the loiter feature reduce the range substancially? In the mode Cent is discussing about the JASSM flies around the FLOT looking for targets for up to 3 hours, so you would think it would reduce the range substancially...

never EVER heard this capability mentioned about JASSM. Sounds MUCH more like Tacticle Tommahawk which has ALL those capabilities at a lower cost than the original Tommahawk.

Yeah it's a pretty innovative system I have to say. This longshot is going to have a lot of tactical uses in the battlefield, especially if we're fighting a North Korean offensive.

apparently this grew out of the "switchblade" concept that sprouted up when TSSAM bit the dust.
