Hi, The Small diameter Bomb is the next gen weapon that is currently being built(?). It is in the 250 lbs class. I wanna know what kind of guidance is it? Laser/ GPS what is it? Is the tested range something like 40 miles? It is optimised so that more weapons can be carried by the F 22 and others in their internal bays. Any good pics/ drawings? |

The small diameter bomb does only weigh 250 lb. and has a 50 lb. warhead. It is GPS guided. It does have the same penetration power though as the 2000 lb. GPS JDAMs and so it can do pretty much the same devestation to the a target as the GBU-34/35 can. It will be cleared for everything pretty much. If the B-2 can drop 80 500 lb. JDAMs, then I imagine the B-1 can do 84 and the B-52 can do 51. Imagine what they could target in SDBs. Talk about battlefield annihilation! And if they build the FB-22, which we all want, it'll be SDB capable. |

the SDB also comes in a 4 round stealthy pod. the SDB REX is the Small Diameter Bomb Range EXtended, it has flip out wings and a 60mile range when released at altitude. The SDB has a somewhat sophisticated auto-pilot which allows it to retain a significant amount of kinetic energy all the way to the target thus the little bomb can get good penetration on a hardened target. |

Thanks Due to the fact that it's smaller and sleeker it will be dropped from high up with their design. It's small, sleek, pointed, and strong so it'll go through about the same amount of reinforced concrete as a 2000 pounder will. It really doesn't take much to destroy a building or a bunker, it's the penetration into it that matters and the SDB will excell at that. |
