I'm in a debate about the M1 Abrams, and I remember you saying something about an M1 that got disabled and was hit with a smart bomb and 7 RPGs but still stayed in one piece. Where'd you hear that at? And if it's on the net could you post a link? |

This was an MiA1 Abrams that was hit in the tracks by multiple RPGs that fused the track to teh return rollers. The crew had to abandon the Abrams and an airstrike was called in and the Tank hit with a 2000lb LGB. THe tank remained 'intact', another words the turret did not displace, but it was burned out from the resultant fire and rendered useless to the enemy. |

Sure, it was in the Army Times... here is one, I will get you the others tomorrow... This one tells of how the RPGs got a 'mobility kill' on one Abrams... http://www.armytimes.com/archivepaper.p ... 867893.php |

BTW you might find this of interest... These two M-1 Tanks were knocked out furing a fight outsidee Najaf during a sand storm and one of the troopers was nearly caught in the fire that resulted from teh cooking off ammunition... http://www.armytimes.com/archivepaper.p ... 717993.php Turns out these two tanks were kncoked out by gunners from a squadron of M-2 Bradley Tnaks and not by Iraqi fire... http://www.armytimes.com/archivepaper.p ... 904457.php The bradleys fire high velocity 25mm depleted uranium tipped rounds...seems they are quite lethal to the thin armor on the rear of the M-1 tank.... |
