While the R-77M has a superior range than the AIM-120 it most certainly is not as well guided. The AIM-120 is rather invisible to the enemy RWR and the AIM-120C version has a good low-altitude fix from the AIM-120A. The 120C is basically a death-ray. |

since these missles are basically the same size ,what did the Soviets trade for (alledgedly) more range? Warhead? thier avionics certainly are NOT smaller than ours. I suspect the superior ranges sometimes reported for R-77 are at a speed at which the missle is basically falling out of the sky with no kinetic energy and FAR past it's usefull range. |

The Russians didn't trade anything, because the Adder reportedly has a shorter range than the AMRAAM. Hence the R-77M1 design (still in development), with a larger sustainer motor, and the fact that the Chinese are basing their PL-12/SD-10 on R-77 avionics and radar, but with their own, better, engines. I would be very interested to see what an extrememly high output boost-coast-boost-coast grain packing would do in an AA missle as far as range is concerned. |

Kap, what you just described above is the next generation AMRAAM. Multi burn pulse rocket sustainer. Is suppossed to double the range and give the missile added 'smash' at the target... Another shortcoming of the 'AMRAAMSKI' verse the slammer is the flight trajectory of the standard (and so far only produced version) of the R-77. The R-77 flies a flat trajectory to target and thus has no additional altitude to trade for energy at the target point to follow a maneuvering target. The AMRAAM flies a 'lofted' trajectory at high altitude where it can coast with less drag due to a thinner atmosphere and regain energy for the terminal phase against a maneuvering target while it dives on its target... |

yeah I posted somewhere here about the range gain for AMRAAM being fired from an F-22 above mach 1, it gives it an effective range on the order of 60 miles or so. |

So it uses the Raptor as sort of a 1st stage to increase the range... Excellent! |

I can't vote for the AIM-54C ![]() They've got that new AIM-120, AIM-120C-7, coming out with added range, upgraded seeker, and improved ECCM. http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/m-120.html - Chris |

excellent post Ivan, but I wish they would leave off that "fire and forget" stuff, there arent very many missles in the world that you could really say that about other than the cruise and ballistic missles and the IR guided missles of course. AMRAAM and Phoenix have always needed mid-course updates from the fighter until they turn on thier seeker for the end kill. |

Well I did direct a guy here (from another board) after having a discussion about this very thing with him (he thought the Russian missile was better). Maybe he voted for the Adder..... |
