I was playing around with the toolkit program and was able to edit the terrain of maps, and know where the graphic tiles are stored for all the various tiles that make up terrain grpahics.

However, once you go past about 38,000 FT., the game automatically switches OFF the terrain bitmaps and turns on FAR TILES which are simply blocks of color.

How do you change these FAR TILES? Each terrain in FA all have different FAR tiles which match each terrain fairly close.

Please help and thanks,

I switched a VIETNAM T2 file and renamed it the KURIL ISLANDS and in the game the kuril islands now have the vietnam terrain BUT when you go past 38,000 feet and the terrain shuts off, it switches to the blocky far tiles of the kuril islands.

it seems the T2 file terrain data and the far tiles (past 38k) are seperate.

Yeah it's over 36,000 in Korea. It's wierd and sucks but can't be fixed.

I don't mind them shutting off past 36 or 38 thousand so much.

What I am curious on is how the game stores these 'past 36K far tiles" since they are seperate from the data in the .T2 file.

Those are the same tiles you see in the far off distance at any altitude. Once past a certain range from the tiles it removes them and simply shows the 'unskinned' tile (this of the terrain tiles you see when under 36K as the same as a aircraft skin you see when in the F10 view. When you zoom out the skin turns off. It all has to do with distance ranges. the basic tile (green, brown, turquoise, etc) are the far distance shapes of the terrain tile. So far I have not been able to loace the terrain tile 'shape' file to see if it can be altered. It is in the source code somewhere but there are thousands and thousands of lines to look for it in. and its in Assembly code! uhhhhhh....

inflight map and the actual terrain in the .T2 file can be made to different sizes. If you expand the .T2 file you can have a much bigger terrain than the standard terrains.

I still am not sure where the 'far tile' data is. It is not the same terrain as when you take textures off. As I said, if you switch the VIETNAM .T2 for example with say KURIL ISLANDS .T2, you'll have vietnam terrain and elevation BUT once you go past 37,000 feet or so it will switch to far tiles and you'll get KURIL ISLANDS far tiles (not vietnam).

What are you talking about 'different sizes'... are you talking about the zoom feature? or what?

Actually I am not, I just didnt understand your message, and still do not. However, personal insults are banned on the FA Board. If you have a problem such as this in the future, then report it to the board moderator and not by posting such things on this board...

I deleted the post.

If anyone figures out where the far tile data is stored, please let me know.
