The primary use of music in FA is as a distraction to add to the SA confusion. If you turn off the music your task saturation threshold goes way up.

Also a good point. I (sometimes) find that in combat, when I am trying to listen to critical radio messages, keep on the tail of that bandit, keep that other bandit off my tail, and protect my wingman, adding music to the pile tends to drive me a little bit crazy. Now, this is not all the time. Sometimes I am able to keep the music in the back of my mind and focus on my task (all of them!).

Try adding these to it as I once encountered during a mission. All of the above PLUS SAMs, incoming A2A, the phone ringing, the microwave timer going off and some goof leaning on the doorbell!!! I completely locked up and couldent do a thing, my first encounter with SA overload and was very glad to be doing this in a sim rather than a real plane.

I disagree, I think miusic reduces SA confusion, as it makes combat in the game alot easier, since the music changes when you encounter threats (thus warning you to get your head up and look around), when you leave a threat area, when you are close to base, etc... Its unrealeastic and an unfair advantage, just like the target window is and the bandit lock dues in it...

Instead I fly with no music, using only cockpit views and controls (no F7 or F8 views, no target or other veiw windows, realeastic avionics only, etc) to try to immerse myself into the simulation as much as possible. I find this increases realeasim and adds to the suspension of reality to make flying FAF that much more pleasurable...

I think once the RWR gear goes off the "advantage" of the changing music pretty much goes out the window lol. I dont personally care wheather the music is on or off, I consider it more like a general heads-up as a real pilot should have from briefings and AWACs.

That depends on the era you are flying...

There was no RWR or AWACs during the Korean War or over Cuba during the Cold War...

To the original poster:

Here is the procedure I think you could try. Use PTR2Cache GUI (http://farc.3synergy.net/misc/p2cgui.zip) to create custom cache files (I like to use the cache.m, but back up your original first!) so that you can extract files using the toolkit, that normally aren't savable. The files will appear in the Missions menu in the Toolkit. I haven't tried it yet but PTR2Cache should work with the ATF Gold TK.

OF COURSE THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP OF ALL TIME IS TO FIRST, BEFORE DOING ANYTHING, VIEW THE MISSIONS LIST IN THE TOOLKIT TO GENERATE THE CACHE.M FILE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!!

The files I think you should focus on are the .XMI files. They will have names such as AIR014.XMI. Use PTR2Cache to first select LIBPTR.XMI, and then select CACHE.M. It will make the XFI files appear in the M file type cache file, accessible in the TK. Double click to try saving them in an ATF Gold Toolkit project, and then copy the files from the project folder (TOOLKIT\PROJECT\PROJECT NAME) to a FA toolkit project folder. Copy the lines in the ATF Gold Project's ITEM.DAT (also in the project folder) to the FA Project's ITEM.DAT (paste at the beginning of the text in the file to avoid crashes in the Toolkit).

There are also .MUS files, which if I had to guess they are music control files. The library Cold War Fighters had custom .MUS files and custom .11K files with titles such as XFI105B.11k, which appear to be the custom music files, maybe the are only for menus???

When I have more time I will try to follow the procedure above, in the mean time please post any questions or problems you encounter.

Zephyr

Zephyr that is some excellent information! You should cut and paste it into a sticky at the top of the forum! :D

Try 11khz 8 bit mono.

I believe the air*** files listed by Speedy in the first post are in flight music, and the xfi files are menu music.

When flying my Sabre, I use only the System Info and Weapons windows, since I of course need to know how much fuel I have and how much of each weapon I have. I added a gunsight radar to the Sabre, but I don't use the radar window when the radar is active, I only use it to aim my guns.
