Can anyone suggest a good stock flight model for the F-86E Sabre? I'm currently using the Saab Draken FM, but that's a 8G airframe (on a Sabre?! Sheesh.) I'm looking to change it. Harrier, Skyhawk, and A-7 Corsair look like good places to start, but what do you guys think? |

I would guess the F-8 without afterburner thrust in the PT file, thus allowing it to go supersonic in a dive only and still pull enough Gs... CAG out... |

Well, tried out my F-8 modeled Sabre the other day, didn't really like it. It had poor handling characteristics above 15,000 feet, and wouldn't pull enough Gs even at 5,000 feet. It felt more like a MiG-15 (I actually considered remodeling my MiG-15 with the F-8 FM). I am now trying out an A-4 Skyhawk, flight model, but haven't made up my mind whether to accept it or not. As an aside, in MiG Alley I remember the Sabre being a little more tricky to fly. If you stalled in a turn, you went into a spin, period. Absolutely unforgiving. The MiG would not spin out unless you thoroughly abused it. |

And that was completely unrealeastic, since the real Mig-15 was actually more maneuverable then the F-86, and went into a spin easier as well... Plus MiG-15s were generally unrecoverable from spins... You will not find an accurate FM for the F-86 or MiG-15 amongst any default FMs, since no default FM handles Gs or drag correctly... I DO think we have a decent MiG-15 in FAF |

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. My F-8-modeled Sabre wasn't all that realistic, because it wouldn't pull more than 5 Gs at low altitude. The real one I think was supposed to pull 6, and could out-turn the MiG at low altitude (but not high altitude). My current A-4-modeled version is not all that close either. This is what I know so far about comparing the two aircraft: 1) The Sabre was faster, but the MiG could turn tighter above 10,000 ft 2) The Sabre had a more powerful engine, but the MiG could out-climb it because the MiG had a lighter airframe, and consequently a better thrust-to-weight ratio 3) The MiG was the overall winner in maneuverability, but the Sabre won the day because its pilots were better trained, and were more clever than the NK and ChiCom pilots Am I right? |

We frequently forget that in low TTW aircraft, wing lift contributes greatly to climb rate. The U-2 had a significant climb rate because the engine got a lot of help from the wing. |

Interestingly, the Soviets claimed that when their "military advisors" were flying the MiGs, the kill ratio was 2 to 1 in their favor! Sounds like commie propaganda to me! |

Probably is. In any case, I plan to explore the A-7 Corsair and Harrier flight models next. What I like about using the Draken is the engine sound. It starts out using a high-pitched whine like a normal jet engine, but when you let it spool all the way up, it drops into this basso rumble, and then a muted, sort of vacuum-cleaner-like sound, just like the real the Sabre! Cool as hell. |

The kill ratio was either 10 to 1 or 7 to 1, always in favor of the Sabrejet. The score varies from the 10 to 1 to the 7 to 1, depending on which score set you go by... Generally its accepted that there was an 8 to 1 ratio in favor of the F-86... The Russian claims have been discredited for 2 reasons... 1) They have no proof of their kills, while the USAF has 1st person testimony backed up by guncamera footage... 2) If you added up all Russian claims, they actually total more then twice the number of F-86s (all versions) produced up to that time!
