Post subject:  New Missions & LIBs Available

Hi All:

Although this is my first post, I'll keep intros short. I got into the game series that would culminate in Fighters Anthology back in 1995 and the release of EA's DOS-based US Navy Fighters. I picked up all the follow-ons and add-ons through USNF '97, after which I stopped playing.

I recently dug out my old game boxes from the closet, snagged a copy of FA through Amazon.com, and started remembering all the fun I'd had with this game back when.

This time around, though, I decided to finish the custom mission projects that I'd started during my first go-around. I also started using the FA Toolkit. The result is three downloads, which you can find on my simple FA downloads page here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/fa/index.html

What's available from the above page:

1) a custom LIB set based on the Global Tribunal release 55.

2) a set of custom missions created by me

3) "navalized" versions of 5 or the 6 FA campaigns

Links to ReadMe's for each of the downloads are available from the downloads page listed above.

I hope you all find something enjoyable or interesting on that page. Comments, questions, and suggestions are, of course, most welcome.

Best,

Eric L. Howes

First off welcome aboard, USNF was where I got my FA start as well :-)
Second off you'd be better off not mentioning GT's name around here, he caused a lot of trouble and brewed a lot of bad blood on multiple occasions.

My apologies if mention of his name brings back bad memories -- certainly not what I had intended. His LIB set is mentioned solely because that was the starting point for my LIB set, and honesty demands that I be up front in acknowledging that connection and debt.

As for what happened on these boards, I am not here to insert myself into that controversy, stake out any position on what went on, or attempt to vindicate anyone else's behavior or position.

Thanks for the heads up, though.

Best,

Sounds like something IT would say...

Where is this guy's IP coming from?

Geez, hadn't realized that he touched so many nerves. You want to know who I am? Here, take a look:

- I was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for a number of years (left 2006)

- while at the U of I, I ran a web site on internet privacy & security that used to be here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/

It's since been moved to here:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/index.html

You'll notice that my FA page is hosted on an alumnus account at the U of I (FA doesn't really fit at SpywareWarrior.com).

- I contribute most of the content at SpywareWarrior.com:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/

In fact, spyware and privacy issues are what I'm best known for on the web:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=er ... gle+Search

- currently I'm working for Sunbelt Software, makers of enterprise security applications, including CounterSpy:

http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Press/Releases/?id=138

FA is one of the things I do to unwind. Really and truly guys, I am not he. I'm simply here to share what I built and learn what I can.

Best,

eBurger, CAG had a particularly nasty encounter with "it" ( his euphamism for GT ) as I recall it even involved a lawsuit so he's naturally a little prickly about the whole subject of GT and his multiple identities on the net. Just hang around and ask/answer good questions about FA, if your not GT it will all be ok.
Again, welcome to our little community :D

KAPTOR:

That's quite understandable -- lawsuits are nasty business. Because of my anti-spyware work I've been on the receiving end of plenty of threats and even a few cease & desist letters. I've been fortunate enough to avoid a full blown legal case, though.

I do have one question about a minor aspect of voice effects. I've looked all through the toolkit, the .JT files, and the toolkit tips online that I've come across, but I've yet to find an answer to this question:

For some reason the AIM-54 got associated with the "Fox One" voice effect instead of the correct "Fox Three." Is this a configurable association, or is it the product of some inaccessible system hard-coded into FA? If configurable, how do I re-associate the AIM-54 w/ "Fox Three"?

(Btw, if this question deserves a new topic, please let me know.)

Thanks,

Eric L. Howes

Hard coded missile call. Its due to an error in the code. It happens on other missiles as well...

Thanks. I had suspected as much, but nice to have it confirmed.

For the Fox Three issue, is this answer still the current answer or has someone figured out something different ?

I just ran into this problem for the first time.

UPDATE: Solution - in the .JT file near the bottom, it has

: ot_names
string: "AIM-54"

If that string says anything other than "AIM-54", such as "AIM-54C", then the computer will call it a Fox One.

That is a nice bit of info there... so do you mean "AIM54.JT" or just "AIM54"? What about missiles that have multiple ot_names in the string?

IIRC this is where you add the AIM120 name to get the same flight dynamics (lofted missile trajectory and last 5 mile radar activation) as the AIM-120 on another missiles like the R-77...

Also doesn't give the enemy a launch warning...

My R-77 has the following...

:ot_names
string "R-77PD Adder"
string "R-77PD Adder"
string "AIM120.JT"

Question... If you fire a default game AIM-120 AMRAAM does it say Fox 3 or Fox 1? I haven't flown a stock setup in decades... Cant remember.

: ot_names
string "AIM-54" < ---- This line here, Fox 3..
string "AIM-54C PHOENIX"
string "AIM54C.JT"

To test the theory, I placed that first line into an AIM9M.JT file, fired it off, and the game called the Sidewinder a Fox 3.

The default game calls the AIM-120 a Fox One.
