Hi All:

Yet another round of updates to the AWNVN project:

1. New NAM-MAPs package

I have uploaded a new version of NAM-MAPS that incoroporates several important changes:

- Fixed the Custom Tiles for Night Missions

The custom tiles/textures LIB has been fixed to eliminate that garish orange block that was showing up in night missions. The effect on the appearance of the tiles during day missions is barely noticeable.

- Re-arranged the Thai Nguyen map items

The Thai Nguyen area had a number of important targets that were hit on a regular basis by USAF fighter bombers. Unfortunately, earlier versions of my Vietnam maps had the default Thai Nguyen objects misplaced. That's been fixed in the new version of NAM-MAPS. All existing Thai Nguyen missions have been tweaked to use the new item locations.

2. New NAM-ELH LIB set

A new version of NAM-ELH has been uploaded. This new version mainly updates a few aircraft (incl. the B-52D) so that they can handle custom loadouts.

3. New AWNVN mission collection

A new version of the mission collection has also been uploaded. In addition to including updated versions of the Thai Nguyen missions (which are synced to the new NAM-MAPS set), this new version also sports 8 new missions:

* Ha Gia POL (2 December 1966)

USAF F-105s & F-4Cs conduct large strikes against the Ha Gia POL storage facility NE of Phuc Yen.

* Lang Son Bridge (6 October 1967)

USAF Thuds bomb the railroad and highway bridge at Lang Son just miles from the Chinese border.

* Thuy Phuong Barge Yard (19 November 1967)

USAF F-105s strike the barge construction yard on the Red River just north of Hanoi.

* Thai Nguyen Ammo Dump (2 August 1967)

USAF F-4Ds provide fighter escort for a Thunder Strike on an ammo dump just north of Thai Nguyen.

* Night Escort (20 November 1971)

USAF F-4Ds provide fighter escort for two cells of B-52s bombing a transshipment point along the Laotian border.

* Northeast Rail Line (21 September 1966)

USAF F-105s bomb the Bac Ninh railroad bridge 15 miles NE of Hanoi as part of a coordinated series of strike on targets on the Northeast Rail Line linking Hanoi with China.

* Northwest Rail Line, Again (7 July 1966)

USAF F-4Cs provide fighter escort for Thuds striking a key railroad bridge 10 miles NW of Yen Bai.

* Thai Nguyen Railroad Bridge (June 10 1967)

USAF F-105s hit the railroad bridge at Thai Nguyen.

All these new files can be downloaded from my FA home page:

Enjoy,

Eric L. Howes

Eric might you be releasing your work to soon, prior to adequate testing? Lots of posts about changes in this string to your work...

Maybe if you sent it out for beta testing 1st you wouldnt have to release so many updates and fixes...

CAG:

This is a beta -- a public beta -- and the ReadMe and Download page clearly designate it as such. And until final release users can expect changes on a regular basis.

I've been posting notices of changes to this beta in order to keep folks who might be dabbling with it apprised of what's going on.

Once AWNVN is released in a final version, the updates will be only very occasional.

Best,

Eric L. Howes

Actually I meant release to a professional Beta Testing organization...

And I wish you the best of luck with it! :D

CAG:

Using a professional beta testing organization had never occurred to me. If you have more info, please do share.

No new updates this week to the NAM-MAPS or NAM-ELH LIBs -- only new missions for the AWNVN mission collection:

* Thai Nguyen Steel & Iron (24 June 1972)

USAF F-4Es fly MiGCAP for F-4Ds hitting the Thai Nguyen steel & iron works with Paveway I LGBs.

* The Heart of the Problem (4 July 1972)

USAF F-4Ds hit the North Vietnamese Air Defense Command & Control Center at Bac Mai with LGBs in an effort to disrupt the VPAF's GCI command & control operations.

* Freedom Porch Bravo (16 April 1972)

USAF F-4Ds fly MiGCAP west of Hanoi to cover a strike on the Bac Mai storage facilities.

* Fighter Escort (5 October 1972)

USAF F-4Es provide fighter escort for F-4Ds striking the ammunition depot at Yen Bai.

* MiGs Galore (8 May 1972)

USAF F-4Ds fly MiGCAP near Yen Bai for an LGB strike on the Thac Ba hydroelectric plant.

* Critical Assets (8 July 1972)

USAF F-4Es fly MiGCAP for an egressing strike force south of Yen Bai.

* The End is Nigh (15 October 1972)

USAF F-4Es fly MiGCAP near Thud Ridge.

* Northeast Railroad, Redux (29 July 1972)

USAF F-4Es provide fighter escort for F-4Ds striking the Huong Vi rail yards NW of Kep.

I also seriously overhauled one related, but pre-existing mission:

* Sowing Protective Corridors (12 September 1972)

USAF F-4Es escort chaff bombers laying a chaff corridor for USAF F-4Ds bombing the La Danh storage caves 35 miles north of Hanoi.

Enjoy,

Eric L. Howes

Hi All:

It's been over 3 months since my last posted update -- thought I'd bring you current on the most recent version of the AWNVN project. All the key components have been updated, including the AWNVN mission set, the NAM-ELH LIB set, and the NAM-MAPS map set.

Here's a quick summary of what's been changed and added...

NAM-ELH:
- SAM and AAA units no longer appear on radar. Instead of following the big bright Xs on your radar scope to their location, you'll have to hunt them down.
- SA-2 and SA-3 units are now more aggressive.
- The SA-2 vehicle item now displays the proper "damaged" shape when destroyed instead of disappearing.
- The USMC RF-4B Phantom II recon aircraft has been added.
- The USAF A-7D Corsair II now sports an improved SEA cammo texture.
- The MiG-21F-13 Fishbed-C now sports a grey texture/shape by Centaurian based on the J-7E.
- The MiG-21MFK Fishbed-J now uses the grey/green cammo formerly used by the MiG-21F-13.
- The little-used M117 2-Pack ordnance item has been replaced by the M117 6-Pack.
- The single Mk-81 ordnance item is now a TER/3-Pack.
- Added a MK-36 Destructor Mine TER/3-Pack.
- Added the M117 12-Pack for use by large bombers.
- A number of soft targets (e.g., hooches, slums, trucks, and soldiers) are now marked "Not collidable when destroyed," which prevents them from interfering with bombing missions once they've been destroyed.
- A Camera Pod for recon aircraft has been added (borrowed from JJ's FA Advanced LIB & using KAPTOR's
recce pod icon).
- Added a "Target Marker" vehicle item for use in non-standard air-to-ground misssions such as recon missions (the new Camaera Pod can damage and destroy the Target Marker) or mine-laying missions (drop mines on the Target Marker). The target marker item could also be used for runway bombing to give attack aircraft several points on a runway to hit.
- A new ship has been added: the CGN Long Beach, which downed several MiGs with her RIM-8 Talos missiles during the war. The Long Beach appears in missions during parts of 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1972.
- Several large aircraft with odd landing/taxiing behavior have been fixed.
- Rockets now arc slightly downward under the force of gravity.

NAM-MAPS:
- Lakes have been added to both maps. In NVN0-MAP (North Vietnam), lakes are located west of Hanoi (south of Viet Tri), north of Yen Bai, and west of Kep. In NVN1-MAP (South Vietnam) a lake appears in Route Pack I near the Laotian border (in addition to the lakes located in North Vietnam). In order to use these new maps, the NVN-TEXT custom texture set (which includes new tiles) must be loaded along with the maps you're using.
- The Hang Gai coastline (NE of Haiphong) is now better represented.
- The Thai Nguyen & Yen Bai areas in Route Pack VI are now better represented with new scenery items.
- The POL storage areas at Haiphong and Hanoi have been reworked.
- The mission planning map for NVN1-MAP (South Vietnam) now has more features marked and labeled.
- A few items have been added to NVN1-MAP, including AAA and SAMs for the defense of Da Nang, and a better airport to represent Dong Hoi.
- Several airports in North Vietnam that were overrun with paddies (making them difficult to see) are now cleaned up. Several areas in Route Pack VI that were previously dominated by vast expanses of nothing now have paddies.
- A medium bridge south of Hanoi has been changed to a small bridge.

AWNVN Missions:
- Thirty-plus new missions have been added, most historical. They range the entire gamut of mission types from 1965-1972. Several of these new missions use the NVN1-MAP for South Vietnam and the southern panhandle of North Vietnam.
- Twenty-plus other missions have been revised to bring them more in line with historical events or to improve playability..
- Minor corrections have been applied to many other missions -- most of the errors corrected would never have been noticed by players, but they bothered me to no end.

The net result of all these changes and additions to the AWNVN mission set is a collection of missions that is larger, more historically accurate, more playable, and more fun and interesting (I hope). Rather than list all the new and revised missions in this post, I have uploaded a plain text summary which you can view here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/fa ... ssions.txt

Finally, all the AWNVN documentation, including the Air War Timeline, has been updated. Of course, all these new components can be downloaded from my FA home page:

Best,

Eric L. Howes

That is because its in your browser cache. The only way I could get the image to display was to paste the URL into a browser window, then after it was saved into the cache it began displaying as your embedded avatar...

Nah, I am just the only one that mentions it to you!!! :P

Really though its most likely due to my high security settings and daily dump of the browser cache...

BTW I get no image at all for you now... :twisted:

Hi All:

Back with another round of updates to the AWNVN Beta. This one is not nearly as extensive as the previous one.

NAM-MAPS:
- The NVN-Tiles set has been overhauled to add more detail to the landscape.

NAM-ELH:
- Two new aircraft: the RF-8A Crusader & the HH-53 Super Jolly
- Minor tweaks to several other aircraft

AWNVN Missions:
- The mission briefing for the first mission of each year/LIB now includes a brief 5-7 page historical backgrounder to help players understand the development of the air war over the course of the time period covered in the mission LIB.
- "Historical Notes" document now includes a short discussion of the "limits to realism" in AWNVN.
- "Air War Timeline" document is now included in the download with the other docs.
- One new mission has been added:

**. Full Circle (12 Jan. 1973)
Midway F-4Bs fly BARCAP over the Tonkin Gulf during the final days of the Vietnam War.

For those who have taken an interest in this project, I would esp. be interested in your reactions to the new map tiles. I think they're a vast improvement, but I'd appreciate other opinions either way.

All of these updates can be downloaded from my FA home page:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/fa/index.html

Best,

Eric L. Howes
