Hi All:

Yet another set of updates to the AWNVN Beta. Here's what new and changed:

NAM-MAPS:
- Further tweaks to the overhauled NVN-Text tiles set, adding still more detail to the landscape.
- Paddies have been removed from several key target areas to allow the mission targets to stand out.

NAM-ELH:
- All A-7 textures have been tweaked. The A-7A in particular now looks much better.

AWNVN Missions:
- The majority of AWNVN missions have had ground targets and other objects adjusted to accommodate the new NVN-Text tiles set. Many large target areas now look much different -- and more interesting, I think.
- Minor tweaks to many other missions.

It has now been about one year since I began work on this project, which turned out to be much larger and more involved than I had originally anticipated. Although there will probably always be minor tweaks that I could make to this and that, I am generally satisfied with the state of this project and its several component parts. Thus, I am am calling this release of AWNVN a release candidate. I plan to let this release sit on my FA web site for a few weeks. If no major issues rear their head during that time, I will post a "gold" release of AWNVN early into the new year.

All of these updated components can be downloaded from my FA home page:

Best,

Why? Locating approved targets was probly the #1 crap-ass job of that whole war, don't make it too easy. Keep the missions short and hard as hell, it keeps the replay-ability higher.
Thanks for continuing the work though :)

KAPTOR:

With the new tiles target items (to say nothing of AAA and SAMs) are much more difficult to locate than previously. I removed paddies from some target areas so that you wouldn't, for example, have paddies sitting on top of a marshalling yard or POL dump.

Take a look at the landscape with the new tiles -- much, much different from the default FA North Vietnam or even my previous set of tiles.

Here you go:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/fa/awnvn-ss.zip

That's a quickie collection of screenshots from one mission (Navy F-4Bs strike a POL storage area SW of Hanoi).

If you need storage space I can give you a segment of space off my servers at vnfawing.com

CAG:

Thanks, but storage space isn't the issue. If I posted all of those images inline, this particular page would open very slowly for some readers.

I'll post one inline -- the rest can be found in the ZIP archive in my previous post.

Hi All:

I've spent the last few weeks since my last announced update working intensely on the mission briefings for the most part. The briefings now sport a greater number of historical notes that are more logically presented and organized among missions. Custom loadouts in missions have also undergone significant revision, esp. for USAF aircraft, which now properly use externally mounted ECM pods. Along the same lines, many aircraft now start missions with pre-depleted fuel states. There are some other, more minor changes worth noting as well:

NAM-MAPS:
- Minor tweaks to a few areas of the maps to accommodate the new tiles introduced in December.

NAM-ELH:
- The F-8E/J Crusader has been separated into different aircraft: the F-8E and the F-8J
- The F-4J Phantom II now carries the AIM-7E, not the later USAF-developed AIM-7E2
- Two new ordnance items added: the GBU-8/B Hobos EOGB & the GBU-11/B Paveway I LGB
- Minor tweaks to some A2A missiles
- Seeker & ECM devices carried by several aircraft have been revamped
- The Storage and POL Tank scenery items now sustain greater damage

AWNVN Missions:
- Dramatically reduced the number of "two carrier" missions (missions in which a/c from multiple carriers fly the same strike mission)
- Ensured that A-1 SANDYs are correctly represented in SAR missions
- Added a new doc: a browseable mission summary in PDF form
- Re-titled a number of missions
- Tweaked a number of mission briefings to ensure formatting consistency
- Overhauled mission briefings for all missions derived from USNF'97 to ensure consistency and better present historical notes
- Overhauled the briefings of all 10 May 1972 missions for sequential consistency
- Moved a large number number of historical notes to briefings of more appropriate missions
- Added a good number of new historical notes to mission briefings
- Added externally-mounted ECM pods to mission custom loadouts of USAF F-105s (Oct. '66 & later) and USAF F-4s (Jan. '67 & later)
- Removed ECM & CM devices from USN aircraft in custom loadouts for missions 1964-1965
- Imposed depleted fuel states on aircraft in missions which start at considerable distance from a base, tanker, or carrier
- Overhauled a number of missions for better playability: Big Iron I (67-0310), Goin' Downtown (67-0811), Going North (65-0329), Walleyes (67-0312), The Dragon Goes Down (72-0513), Furball at Hai Duong (72-0510), Alpha Strike (72-0510), MiGCAP Alert (68-0710), Yen Son Station (65-0720), Shoot 'n Scoot (66-1110)
- Added four new missions, all historically based:

**. Logan's Run (5 July 1972)

F-4Es from Korat escort a strike package of Phantoms hitting an ammo dump near Bac Ninh.

**. Brother's Keeper (19 April 1967)

A lone F-105F CAPs a SAR operation for a downed Weasel crew west of Hanoi.

**. Skyraiders (20 June 1965)

A flight of USN A-1H SANDYs from the Midway flies a RESCAP mission NW of Thanh Hoa.

**. The Pods (8 October 1966)

Thuds from Takhli fly the first strike mission into Route PAck VI using the new QRC-160
ECM pods when they strike the Nguyen Khe POL storage just north of Hanoi.

-----

AWNVN is still on the road to release, though that date will now be in early to mid Febraury. As such, I'm calling this Release Candidate 2 (RC2). When updating, please make sure that you download the new versions of all components (NAM-MAPS, NAM-ELH, AWNVN missions), or some missions may break:

CAG:

Thanks. Yeah, it certainly would be nice if FA still had the audience it once did.

Ten years ago the PC I had could barely run the Win9X versions of the series games that were out. That's one of the reasons I stopped playing. I sure had boat loads of fun with the DOS versions of the games, though: USNF, ATF, Marine Fighters, NATO Fighters.
