Post subject:  NEW Cuban Missile Crisis LIB

Just to let y'all know I am working on a custom LIB and campaign set based on the Cuban Missile Crisis. It will follow OPLAN-316. It won't be as extensive as my Game Remod series was once upon a time but it will use some of the elements recycled from it. So far here are some highlights:

  • Working nuclear missile launchers (sorry Key West but you had it coming)
  • Replacement of flyable aircraft with custom aircraft
  • Bombs, Bombs, Bombs (it's 1962 you aren't using much in the way of missiles)
  • Fuel Tanks (seriously it's ridiculous how many different fuel tanks there are across the board)

Yes I know it isn't much but hey I am giving myself a pass on the fact that it's been how many years?

Looking forward to some old school action.

On the other side I am going to use this as sort of a "dry run" on my standard damage formulas. I set up a calculator (like I had once upon a time) that takes the weight of the warhead and the type of warhead and spits out "standardized" damage values. Aircraft, tanks, and ships have standardized values too based on wing/rotor area, weight, and displacement, respectively.

Can't wait to play it!

Gen. LaMay waited to bomb them into the stone age. :)

Best Regards,
Pappy

Don't get me wrong, LeMay was awesome but the man would have called an Arc Light level strike to kill the gopher from Caddyshack.

I agree!

He directed the air war against the Japanese homeland in WWII with B-29s.
The Air Corps dropped thousand of pounds of dumb bombs from high altitude with little accuracy.
Then LeMay came in and the Air Corps changed to incendiary bombs and Japanese cities burned up.

Pappy

Apparently I've caused too many damage points. I was flying around with -2000% damage or something like that and not blowing up - I forgot that could happen.

Unfortunately while my standard damage formula seems to be working all right on conventional munitions - except guns - on nuclear weapons it is quite dysfunctional. No worries! I'll solve it.

Work has been WORK. Anywhere here is the redesigned NAS Key West. I am taking out some of the default objects for the map and scrubbing some of the useless airfields. I hope to use game objects to get a better representation of the airfields. I'll admit NAS Key West here doesn't look much like the real NAS Key West but it's a little more decorative at least.

Work is still moving along but slowly. I loaded an old Cuban map I made once upon a time and I am going to use that one so I don't have to figure out how to rearrange the airfields. Plus in this map Havana is a bit built up. I ran a test mission against an SS-4 battery with SA-2 and AAA protection. I knocked out the four launchers and I'm now unhappily sitting in a Cuban POW camp.

I put a mission with a 2-ship of F-4Bs and a 4-ship of F-8Es. The F-4s were loaded with M117s and Mark 83s. The F-8Es were loaded for CAP. Their opposition was four MiG-19Ps. It was a long way in at 1,000 ft AGL. The SA-2s didn't launch at me (because I kept low) but flying through that much AAA is an experience unto itself. There were ZPU-4s, M1939s, S-60s, KS-12s, KS-19s, and AKs down there. Yum!

So good news, development can restart. Previously, I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 via the UPGRADE feature. I was lazy and I did not want to do a full reformat, despite knowing that the upgrade option is never clean. Windows 10 worked well enough but there were some glitches and what not - none affecting FA or FATK in VMWare. Needless to say, I knew I was going to have to do a proper reformat, OS install. That was completed Friday night and everything is back to normal and running well. So I can get back into the swing of working on this.

Here's a quick download to what I've worked out so far:

You have the LIB inside along with several mission files.
- C00 = Setup file, nothing happening
- C01 = Long & boring U-2F flight from 14-OCT-62 when the missiles were discovered
- C02 = Short & boring RF-8A flight at low-level over San Cristobol III & IV from 27-OCT-62
- C03 = Where the fiction begins; fly as an F-4B on armed escort for a reactionary strike to SC III/IV where the RF-8As were shot at from the previous day; strike package includes A-4Cs on Iron Hand & Strike, F-4Bs on Armed Escort & CAP, an RF-8A for recce, and some MiG-15s for fun

The other mission files are just set up files as well, nothing happening there.

Good news everybody!

I have installed an 8TB hard-drive into my PC and done a full reformat.
While attempted to back up my VMWare file (you know the one with the FATK on it in XP) I totally bugged and corrupted it.
