 Post subject: New Aircraft Carriers

I got a hair up my butt the other day and decided to make new aircraft carrier numbers. The textures look just fine when assigned to the default carrier (i.e. Nimz or Kitt), but when I build a new carrier with the shape files modded to reference the new pics, the Island, Cat Guy, and tugs are gone. What am I doing wrong/ missing or is it "hardwired" into the program? I noticed CVN-71 & -76 on Kapset 3.0 did the same thing.

They do for me. However, I think I ran into this problem before.

I'm trying to build a new aircraft carrier that looks like the top picture. However, what I end up with is the bottom picture.

USS Independence [uses Kitty Hawk as a basis]

CV62.SH CV62_A.SH CV62T.SH XCV62.SH
_CV62.pic _CV62_A.pic _CV62T.pic _CV62TD.pic _XCV62.pic

I used the hex editor on the .SH files to tell them to look at the listed .PIC files.

It's as if the program doesn't know how to find the cat officer, island, tower, and a/c tugs since I changed the name of the ship.

I tried adding the file ~KITTT.OT {aka Kitty Hawk Tower} and changing its name and insides to match (i.e. ~CV62.OT), to no avail.

Maybe this will help. It's from my tips & tricks back in 2003 and you'll recognize the author:

Ok due to the many requests in my email I have decided to share how
you make a new carrier and keep the tower... You can only do this for
a small number of extra carriers(like 1 so far for the Nimitz or
Kittyhawk shape !ha!)...
This is how I did it...... I made the Clem into the Eisenhower by
changing the shape file in the CLEM.NT file from the clem.sh to the
nimz.sh and by copying and renaming the NIMZT.SH to CLEMT.SH thus
replacing the clem tower... Thus I have Two Nimits class carriers...

Addition editing will be required of the skin files as the towers now
overlap the deck edge elevators but this is just a texture fix to
solve..

Next to get another Kittyhawk class carrier I simply replace the
NIMZ.SH file in the NIMZ.NT file with a new Conn.SH fle(renamed and
hexed copy of the KITT shape for Constellation)and replaced the
KITTT.SH file in the ~KITTT.NT file with CONNT.SH(hexed copy with new
skin of the KITTT.SH file) thus I have two new Kittyhawk class
carriers with towers and the Eisenhower...

Now to get the Clem back as a usable carrier I simply added another
carrier and used the CLEM shape .. The clem shape and tower are hard
linked thus you dont lose the tower when you make a new one..

Also to make an additional Clem shaped carrier simply use the XCLEM
shape(You will have to copy the CLEM_A.SH shape and rename it
XCLEM_A.SH if my memeory serves me) in another NT file and you have
two Clem shaped carriers.......

So as you can see there is really no mysterious way to make new gains
in FA, you just have to do some unorthodox thinging is all.....

Just let you imagination wander and you usually end up finding
solutions...

Thanks for the response. As I was suspecting, yet hoping wasn't true, it is hardwired into the code. That's unfortunate. I could live without the tower, cat guy, and a/c tugs, but the island/bridge is a rather significant portion of the ship.

Update: If you are willing to share, I'd like to post your collection of tips & tricks on my website.
