for those of you using my helos in your libs. I just found a glitch and dont know how it slipped by. The "skid" helos Cobra, Huey, BO-105, Gazell, and Jet Ranger wont taxi or take off under AI control you can fix it just by changing the brake setting to 500 instead of the infinite of 32767, this doesnt really affect the "realism" too much since if you land a skid helo with some forward speed they will scoot along the ground a little unless your going too fast then you just roll it up into a ball of junk ROFL. Wheeled helos are unaffected.

You mean that the helos will not even take off vertically? I have not tried your hueys yet, do they take off vertically like the Hips?

And dont worry Kap we forgive ya! lol!

if the real helo has skids rather than wheels then yeah nothin happens they just sit there, the AUTO or AI needs to roll forward till it gets to about 20 kts then it will lift off (remember when AI flies helos it does it at 0 vector regardless of what limit you gave it in the PT or TK) so IF the brakes are stiff enough( to simulate the skids) it wont roll, so it wont take off. I WANT to find what gives the stock Mil-17 in FA the "clunk" landing sound (even though the Mil-17 HAS wheels LOL ) since that would be better suited for skid helos.

Yea that is something to investigate!

Got a question for you... why does the Hip take off vertically off the parking ramp on runway 2 without rolling forward then? I believe the Hind does it also, but only from the parking ramp...

I think its a winger thing, but if you look VERY close you may see them move anyway, they only need 20 kts and I can only say this for MY helos since they are technically "airplanes" (remember you uncheck that "it's a helo" box in the TK to make them flyable) My C-17 and A-10s will do the same thing since I have them set to T/O from short airfields.

So they are not really taking off purely vertical? Are you certain? I see them going from not moving to directly vertical without forward maovment... On the short runways they roll forward, but on runway 2 they take off purely vertical from teh parking ramp(yes wingies as i have not tested it yet for seperate flights but I will tonight)...

DUDE what are you stalking me or something LOL.

I dont know for sure what they are doing just know what I see when I watch it on auto from inside the pit, they roll to around 20kt then lift off.

AI choppers take off vertically from large airbases, regardless whether they are placed on the runway or on the ramp (tested it at Key West Airbase with Mi-24, Ka-50, AH-1, AH-64, UH-60, RAH-66 ...)

For landing they all land on the runway, though and taxi to their parking position (just tested it with th4e AH-1, that looks funny [and sucks]).

If you talking about taxiing looking funny, yeah but I have seen helos directed to land in one area and taxi to anotherin a low hover.

Its called 'hover-taxi' and its very realeastic... It is exactly how helos maneuver around airbases...

Now I tested this extensively last night and watched from alt f1 view and alt f10 view and wingmen in helos do not move forward from large bases taking off UNLESS they are wingman #1 right behind you on the runway, then they do the STOL takeoff, the other wingmen parked on the ramp all lift purely vertically into the air...

If ya need more proof you could ask Tank to take a video of it for ya! hehe

lol hey I aint arguing, I'm just tellin what I see in the HUD thats all, ROFL doesnt make a beans worth of diff to me if they take off vert or do a short roll. I dont think I've even seen a real Mil-24 do a vert takeoff, allways a rolling run, uses much less fuel, lets them carry a heavier payload too.

When I tested in Key West I had an wing of 10 AI helos all on the base with wingleader and wingman 1 on the runway. I was looking from an AV8 which started airborne. In this case even the 2 AI choppers on the runway started vertically.

hmmmm, interesting! I guess the game does whatever it wants since I never see wingman #1 do a vertical take off, always rolling, and then other wingmen always so a vertical only takeoff... only on large runways... on the small ones I see some choppers do a rolling takeoff and some doing vertical... FA has a mind of its own!

CAG out...
