I am initially building the single placed pit version, however I will add a two pit version as soon as I complete the initial version...

Yes this IS a VERY SWEET BIRD! That is why I have always wanted to have one in FAF... My model is pretty close...

This bird carries 82% more internal fuel then the Standard C model and has higher low level speed with a full combat load(rated at Mach 0.9 with a full bomb load at low level) and has 40 % more range then the F-16C with two wing tanks...

I also noticed the gear isnt moved to the rear very much. That is helpful...

Looks like a very small fuselage plug was inserted between the main gear and the forward cockpit and a lager one rear of the gear to give the fuselage adquate length for the larger engine...

Plus no stability strakes so that frees up those polygons for use elsewhere... I can use them also... to model those rearward wing strages/humps/nacelles on the trail edges on the cranked arrow wing...

Thanks for all the Great Pics! These shots really, Really, REALLY HELP!

heh...

CAG...

I believe that NASA still flies the F-16XL's regularly to test things. They did some strange stuff recently with an extended wing on one side.

Anyway, are you going to make the Black and yellow striped skin? That one is pretty wicked.

Here is a pic of the "wing glove"

and a picture of the black and yellow without those white heat experiment things all over it

Also, I'm sure you realize this, but the F-16XL has no fins on the belly like the F-16A thru E. I just wanted to mention this, because I think it would be easy to overlook.

LOL! Have you been reading your VNFAWING EGroup emails? I have been asking about the belly fins for about a week and it was cleared up just this Saturday...

THe skin will be a combat skin for FAF Korea and the several test versions (including the black and yellow) used by NASA in the Western US theater..

correct about the plug being between the main and nose gear, I believe it was 30 inches but not sure and most likely for the wing rather than engine.
That wing glove was to test active laminar flow control, it had many thousands of laser drilled holes in it and a suction was applied inside the wing to remove the surface air from the wing and decrease drag.
I THINK at one time it was to get the TV paddles first experimented with on the X-31, they were gonna do it on the HARV F-18 too.

CAG they also had a 3 or 4 tone gray pattern that were basically just wide stripes running diagonaly across the plane, it actually looked rather cool but I have only seen it in videos not still pics.

Just wanted to say thanks for the info I received on the F-16XL...

The great news is that since the lower strakes are no longer on the aircraft, I was able to use them for the wings far edge trailing edge instead of using the rear horizontal stabilizers polgons there, which have 5 sides instead of the 4 sided polgons for the strakes, that enabled me to use them for the pods on the trail edges mid points of the wing, which I didn't think I was going to be able to model, though they are flat instead of humped, at least they are there now...

To much work to do that cammo pattern... dont you think I already have enough work to do? lol! Besides, I am sure Cent wants the original F-16 type skin, or he will complain about it like he does the change on the F-22 skin! J/K ... LMAO!!
