The Advanced Cruise Missle was originally conceived to run on a coal slurry fuel to add energy density to a small package. But this is a job for the engine makers not the DOD.

CAG

Didn't the Nazis and the Japanese refine oil from coal to fuel their war efforts in WWII? I think it was used in rolling stock, trucks, cars, etc. Did they experiment with it fueling aircraft?

What do you know about this?

Regards,
Pappy

Hot Off The Radio Waves FLASH!!

The USAF announced that tests on using synthetic jet fuel made from natrual gas and coal was successful. The tests were preformed in Cal.
That is all the info that was given.

Pappy

This was done in a 50 hour test at Tinker AFB on a TF-33 engine, it was actually a blend of 50-50 synth fuel developed by the South Africans ( but produced for this test by Syntroleum in Tulsa who are making 100,000 gallons of the stuff for testing) and regular JP-8 jet fuel. They found no differance in the synth blend and regular JP-8 other than the synth blend had much lower emmisions since it has no sulfer in it.
In-flight trials on a B-52 ( since it has 7 "spare" engines lol ) will come next.

Kaptor
Thanks for more details of the test. Is the TF-33 the engine used on the B-52? This could save alot of money and make us a little less dependant on foreign oil. Let me know if you get info on the inflight test results.
Thanks :)

Regards,
Pappy
