I don't know, this one's a toss up for me, what with the helment site of the Archer.......

I think I'm going to hold off my vote until I hear both sides of the issue

That was a hard choice to make, both great missiles. But I had to give to the archer, it came before the X.

Well BiG I am not sure exacly how it works, but the helmet *thingie* is suppost to I belive work with the AA-11 wide range of engament. So that the pilot doesn't have to have his hud (and plane) focused on the target but just keep the bogie in his sights. If I am not misteken he AA-11 has a 60 degree or so (maybe ^ or V) angle of engament from the nose of the carrier aircraft.

AIM-9X has a 90 deg FOV and can me used with a HMS also. It has a bigger warhead than the AA-11 and is IIR guided so flares don't matter at all. The AIM-9X while it has a range out to about 10nm can actually go 10nm. There is some question as to whether or not the AA-11 can engage targets at 20 or 30km because of the quality of the seeker glass (very poor cites acig.org). The AA-11 while it has a 60 deg FOV and HMS has a much weaker warhead and is actually flare hungry (acig.org). AIM-9X is faster and a lot more powerful and agile now that it has thrust vector. AIM-9X now that it is in service is the worlds' most advanced, powerful, and best dogfight missile. It beats the Python 4, the previous holder of that title.

There's some contestation as to whether it can track anything past 20 km because of the seeker quality...hell even to the range of the AIM-9X there is some question.

Aim9X is one generation ahead, would be pathetic if it wasnt better.

In my opinion the order from good to better:

Matra Magic II and PL-8
AIM-9M
R-73E RDM1
Python 4
AIM-132A ASRAAM
AIM-9X

But some of these are very close in overall capabilities, with some advantages and some disadvantages. Somewhere in there goes the Python 5 (in development) and IRIS-T.

Until the AIM-9X came out the AIM-9M-9 was the most advanced ECCM dogfight missile in the world. Talk about a duesy!
