I finished the Russian WInter Cammo skin for the Su-17M4...

This was also a ral b1tch to do as I had to again remap the skin to remove duplicate skin panels and alter the positioning of the skin panels so I could line up the cammo patterns...

A real pain, but what else is there to do when its 9 degrees F outside?

I have a viable solution for the delimma with the shadow for the SU17...

Using the current SU-7 shape the shadow resembles the Su-17 only when the wings are fully swept...

But when landing with the wings swept fully forward you dont get the forward wing shadow and it looks really weird.

So, I tested several swing wing shadow shapes and came up with this one, the TU26 shadow...

The wing shadows sweep forward for landing and back for high speed flight, better matching the SU-17's 2 position sweep and looking much more realeastic when landing...

The shadow is, of course, much to large in its current form, but I will do some quick edits and reduce its size to match the SU-17 shape so its much more realeastic.

I should be done with that editing in the next hour, until then here is the Su-17 in flight with the Tu-26 shadow shape in place...

Well the new shadow shape didnt work out to well...

The shadow I built from the Tu26 shadow looked great when sitting on the ground with teh wings forward, but when flying fast the wings retracted all teh way back into the fuselage... Nothing I did woudl change that due to the formula that shadow shape uses to sweep the wing shadow...

So then I moved to the MiG23 shadow shape and reshaped it to lool like the SU-17 and now I have a warping shadow shape due to the new shape of the shadow. I may or may not be able to fix that with altering the shadow skin layout, but I doubt it...

So right now I am 0 for 2 on these shadows and things are not looking to good...

I will update you guys further if I end up with a successful shadow with sweeping wing shaodw for the SU-17 some time tomorrow...

Well this shadow shape editing stuff is for the birds! Very frustrating. I can reshape it all I want, but there are all sorts of issues with the shadow warping at certain angles (happened every time I edited a shape to have the distinctive pointed edge of teh rear of the fixed segment of the wing), the wings sweeping all weirdly after reshaping, and I ended up having to compromise and I am not very happy about it...

I tried every siwng wing shadow shape in FA and none were really very effective. And I found out the Tornado shadow shape doesnt even have wings that sweep in the shadow to match the aircraft. I guess they ran into similar problems that I did when trying to make one for that aircraft and gave up and built a fixed position shadow shape with the wings always in the forward position, thinking that the simmer would not even notice since the only time you see the shadow is when you are landing or taking off, and the wings are always forward for that anyway...

I might end up having to do the same if I cant make a better shadow shape then this one...

Not sure it was never specified. It never got anywhere, I think it had the "designation" of Su-22M-5 or Su-17M-5.

That would be Angola then.
