Big, think about that for a few minutes....

The cammo is to hide the aircraft IN FLIGHT from the Mk 1 eyeball of the other bandit, if he gets close enough, since he wont detect him on radar. Thus the only way he could find him is visually, so you make that harder also, by having the aircraft blend into the horizon colors.. so that by the time you see him he is already firing a AIm-9X at you and closing for a gun kill!

If that's the case then why aren't our F-16s painted in camo? IIRC our only F-15s in camo are the ones stationed in Alaska.

If the Pentagon is really as worried about your points as you think then why aren't the above two planes in camo? What about the F-18, the F-14, the Harrier? Why aren't the F-14 and F-18 painted blue?

Why didn't we paint our planes in a desert scheme before we sent them to the Persian Gulf? (both times)

The F-15 and F/A-22 are painted in low-visibility gray, its designed to provide the lowest visibility in the widest range of conditions. The same idea is behind the gray color of other current US aircraft: A-10, F-14, F/A-18, KC-135, B-52, etc. Something like jungle camoflague works ok provided you're over that environment, but with aircraft flying higher, in all weather, and at night, gray is the best color to go with to blend somewhat into all situations.

Add to this BIg, that the Alaskan F-15Cs do not even use the light grey ghost theme...

They and Kadena based F-15Cs use a newer darker theme to blend the fighters into the 'purpilsh' horizon and mountians of the far northern sky..

Old habits Big! You should really remember to always check your data before posting statements...

And in releation to the F-16s, their mission is more strike then fighter now and their overall 'blues' now more or less relate to shadings of the sky flying lower...

Oh well, it isn't a big deal.

BTW- the reason F-16s are now in the strike role is because no one ever bothers to send up enemy bandits anymore......

Case and point- Iraq.....

Also- are all the F-22s going to be painted in the artic job? Or just ones that are stationed in or close to snowy terrain?

The camo scheme for F-15 (and perhaps others) is called "Compass Ghost"(the "ghost grays" are the actuall paint names) I believe this is the overall program to reduce visability. It's primary job ,as far as the pattern is concerned, is to help remove highlights and lowlights/shadows. I personally prefer dissruptive patterns myself, that make it harder to tell what the maneuvering aircraft is doing(the false canopy being an example, the F-16 is also an example, as the dark gray stops at the wing canopy juntion) As far as the A-10 goes, one of the A-10 program guys told me the switch back to gray was for the use of an IR suppressing paint, they have it in gray but apparently not in all the Euro-1 colors, but the color helps against the AAA which is the A-10s main threat (since we dont let them out to play in a hostile A2A environment)

Kap,

While your info is good, its dated... Compass Ghost with its 'ghost greys' is no more..

All F-15s will transition to a darker scheme along the same pattern. Essentially what they are flying in Alaska will become the norm across the airforce..

F-15s at Kadena, Okinawa, Japan already fly the new scheme..

The 'Ultimate' Eagle... Could turn circles around the F-16 and anything the Russians ever built...

STOL Eagle with forward canards and thrust vectoring, high performance engines.. Untouchable!

This F-15 had half the turning circle of the F-16A!

Now they're just messin with tradition, lol

BTW KAP- AAA aint much of a threat to the A-10. What with its super titanium armor, and bullet-proof glass. Those things can fly at tree-top level, have limited A2A capability, and it's one of the only aircraft in the world actually built AROUND the gun!

In the past some of them returned after combat ops missing engines, stabilizers etc. One even came back without one of its wings IIRC.

yeah the STOL/MTD F-15 was way cool, they were expecting as much as 2 more Gs out of it, dont know if they got that much. They had lots of trouble with the bearings in the TV system though. Did anybody see the jet powered hovercraft they built to launch F-15s and others from bomb damaged airfields LOL, they were working on that about the same time as the MTD.

LOL do we REALLY have to go throught THIS again LOL. Bigs, the canopy is made of regular old Lexan(or plexyglass I dont remember which) only the front windscreen is bulletproof and that's only to .50 cal (btw this is from the pilots and crews who work on them) A-10s have never come back without a wing or missing an engine as far as I know ( sure should have heard THAT from my freinds over there) and IF they were missing stabs they would also miss the entire rear surfaces LOL and thus couldent fly LOL. As to the Titanium cockpit, yeah it's great as long as you dont take fire while inverted or in a hard roll, THEN the titanium pit becomes a catchers mitt, as the slug starts rattling around in there with YOU in the middle of it LOL. AAA is definately the main threat to Warthog with MANPADS second.

I think I still have some SAM damage pics one of the guys sent me to post from IIRC Afghan. IIRC this was from an SA-6 but definately not sure, it's been a while.
