 Post subject: Navy F18F Crash

Sad news two days ago, as a U.S. Navy F18F Super Hornet crashed on approach to NAS Key West, Fla.
The Super Bug was coming in on approach for an emergency landing with one engine out. Soon the other engine when out.
The two Navy aviators ejected and were recovered, but died in hospital.

Our prayers go out to the families of the experienced aviators, their squadron mates and all who serve our country.
They died in service to our country making the world safer for all of us.

We pray a prayer of comfort for the loss and protection for all our sons and daughters who serve,
putting it on the line daily for us.

Speaking of Super Hornets, I was wondering what is it that the military uses the -F model for that the -E model doesn't do / isn't used for?

If I remember right, they used the F/A-18F to replace the F-14 in the patrol and recce role. The F/A-18E they mainly use for the ground-attack mission.

I had noticed many of the former F-14 squadrons ended up with -F models.

The Navy put the F14 crews into F's since they were trained crews.
14 RIO's became Weapon Officers.

Both E's and F's are F/A, fighter attack and can do A to A or A to G roles.
F's maybe better for intercept utilizing the role F14 did.

Thanks for the clarity. The way the navy has replaced aircraft over the years has always been a little murky to me. I usually go to my buddy in Norfolk for the answers haha!

I'm just glad the Navy no longer names (letter/number designations) aircraft like they did prior to 1962.

The Tri-Service Designation System is truly a godsend and so is the JETDS. Now if only there was a guide to all of the hideous Mark designations.

F/A-18F's have picked up the Fast FAC role as well as RESCAP... They also are preferred for Deep Strike/All Weather strike as they picked up this mission from both the F-14 and the A-6. The Tomcat provided the RIO and the Intruder provided a BN... which both make good use of the second seat...
