A-10 can only carry 6 Mavs and they dont even use the triple launcher anymore, WAY too much drag so really only 2 Mavs per sortie, same reason they rarely carry TERs of anything especially CBUs. The 3 fusalage pylons almost never carry anything all at the same time(the middle one is usually deleted) they are just too close together. The BIG 600 gallon F-111 fuel tank is all that usually gets to ride on the centerline, and thats just for ferry missions.

The AGM-65G can't be put on a TER and its much better than the D so thats basically why they use it instead of the TER AGM-65D but back in ODS they were using TERs because the G was still very new.

yeah the G and the others with the heavier warhead are weight restricted from going on the triple launcher ( and before anyone goes weird NO, Mavs DONT go on TERs LOL they have thier own triple launch rail)

Cag is right when he says that back in NAM the B-52 couldn´t hit the congs supply line..... But this line was very well hidden.
and I think that even the F-111 wouldn hit the congs cus they were almost "invisible" while passing throug dense jungle....

All in All The B-52 has showed his face on TV(movies, Band´s Name) many more times than F-111 so for me he´s the One!

B-52 and F-111 fought in the same wars until the F-111 was retired...the F-111 however fought over Libya which the B-52 didn't...F-111 was more of a precision attacker whereas the B-52 was a bomber in the oldest of sorts...nothing like 108 (in the D) MK-82s falling from the sky on some VC supply lines to ruin a few peoples' days...

Ehh but still look at this though...

A-10 has that GAU-8 plus a whole lot more hardpoints and can carry more in quantity than the F-111s 4 hardpoints...while the F-111 can carry more in weight, the A-10 can carry lets say 4 CBUs, 12 AGM-65s, 2 rocket pods, plus still have a pair of AIM-9s and a full 1174 quan gun load...A-10 could prob. kill more tanks than the F-111 on a single sortie...I mean lets say the F-111 has 4 GBUs, thats 4 tanks unless they are packed closely...lets say it has clusters, yeah thats fine and dandy if they are closely packed and such...agm-65s on an f-111 yeah but it can only carry 12 total (3 per pylon) so that right htere is just 4 of the 11 A-10 pylons.

I think you just stepped in it Cent!... Did I possibly read above that you were actually comparing the number of harpoints and weapons the A-10 could carry into combat as actually being MORE then the Vark? Did you say 4 hardpoints?

Now Cent.... The F-111 has 4 underwing hardpoints alreaight, ON EACH WING! the two inside rotate with the sweep of the wing, the two outside are fixed and require the wings to stay at a specific 26degrees of sweep...

Image

Plus you completely FORGOT the internal bombay! Essentiall the F-111 can carry a maximum load of 48 MK-8s 500lb bombs... I can tell you one thing for certain... if the A-10 was ever loaded up lik that it would never get off the ground!

I think even Big can kick yer arse on this one!

CAG out....

Well...sorta. The 2 outermost pylons were never flightcleared to carry anything. The next 2 outboard pylons are sorta fixed, no they dont swivel with the wings but they CAN be set on the ground to a particular angle 26º to match wingsweep for flight(you can find photos of FB-111s with fuel tanks on the outboard pylons pointed in at the fusalage on takeoff to match the "cruise" setting for the wing once in flight) these 2 pylons can be ejected in flight if the pilot needs to have more sweep . And of course the bombbay is occupied by the PaveTack system.
But the Vark wasnt for CAS (Macnamara's delusions aside) wouldent do it very well, and didnt have to. It was the pre-emminant penetrater in the world for 30 or so years and that alone puts it in the history books. We dropped it from inventory not because it couldent do it's job anymore but because the AF wanted to save money by consolidating the logistics tail and just have 2 basic TAC aircraft F-15s and F-16s ( the AF has never been proud of the A-10 cause it aint pretty enough and has tried to get rid of it several times, and is trying yet again to lose it). A-10 tactics recently have been to use Mavs and CBUs to dissable the local air defence of say an armored column, then go in with the GAU-8 blazing to clean up the rest of the targets, so a lot of hardpoints arnt needed for that style of mission, just the most powerful gun fitted to an aircraft and lots of ammo.

I see so rarely the F-111 with all four pylons on each wing...plus the bombbay can only carry 2 weapons or a M61 or the pavetack...normal combat load for an F-111 is 24 MK-82s on four pylons...

plus you can't load more than 1 GBU per pylon, unless they used the 2 holder that the ef-2000 uses (2 GBU-12s or 16s) per pylon...mk-82s and cbus are good against tanks and what not but clusters are only good if these tanks are clustered into a small area...i'd much rather have a bunch of mav's to take out tanks than cbus

plus man that gbu.

i never said the A-10 could carry more weight than the F-111 just said a much wider and bigger selection.

I am afraid you are wrong on both counts Kap...

The F-111 was indeed cleared for carriage of a wide variery of weapons on the outer pylons. Also fuel tanks as you mentioned, plus SRAM and GP bombs.

Also the F-111 was the premenient CAS machine in DS. With more confirmed 'tank plinking' kills then any other aircraft in theater. Using the GBU 500 lb bombs on triple racks, Varks could take out entire armored battallions in one night and in fact did! The A-10 never came close to these types of figures, and all without a combat loss!
