The void between 1977 and 9-11 was unprotected? Ya see I just don't know if I am going to buy that. I mean yes there may have been no "SAMs" but then again, Delta Force "doesn't exist."

OK Cent, go try and find some. All Nike sites were disbanded by the US Army. Hawk was also retired by the US Army. No CONUS SAM sites existed after that date. I doubt they existed in Canada either (When was the last time you ever heard of the Canadians paying for something they did not have to?). Patriot sites were in the process of being put into place in Europe when the Warsaw Pact started to crumble...

The US Army has quite a few Patriots, but before 9/11 there were no deployed CONUS sites...

It doesn't make sense that we'd leave our major cities unprotected in the midst of the Cold War.

It is the same reason we had no functional Anti Ballastic Missile system.. THe Saprtan/Sprint system we installed in Grand Forks was active for one whole day before Congress cut funds and ordered it closed.

Nike Zeus had a limited point defense capability against ICBMs but was renedered ineffective by MIRV warheads and decoys and was withdrawn.

Nike Hercules had a HUGE support setup to control the missiles. They had sites around every major city in the CONUS, but funding was cut and the sites dismantled (ther are pics all over the web of the old dismantled and abandoned sites) throgh the 1970s.

The reason nothing was defende was due to the US/USSR perscribing to the MAD Doctrine... MAD = Mutual Assured Destruction. Essentially no nuclear war would start becasue both sides had so many launchers that absolute destruction by both sides was assurued if the war ever started...

Nope no CONUS Sam sites...

Also the previous page statement by Big just proves my point... If DC had SAM defenses it would not need the Avenger vehicles sitting outside the capitol...

I don't know why they didn't put up HAWKs or PACs or something, I mean Avengers basically fire the latest Stinger...I would rather have something with a bit more of a punch defending a city...I wonder if they'll put up HUMRAAMs when they become available...now that would be awesome...

I also do not beleive the threat is credible anylnger. I believe the SAMs are there strictly as confidence builders for the Fed workers and visitors..

People said that on Sept. 10 as well....

Of course there is a threat...the orginial target for the second WTC plane was the Empire State Building...Thats another one they'd love to smash and bring down as well as 3/4 of the other buildings in Manhattan...Dude seriously that is a major threat still.

Cent they would need to have an army of 50 guys with automatic weapons to take over a comercial airliner nowadyas. The passengers all know they would die anyway so there is nothing to stop them from stomping the terrorists! Hell your gonna get blown yup you might as well risk a knife wound or gunshot to kill one of the bastards before you die!

Either way, another 9/11 type airline attack is very unlikely...

Ever hear of group menatlity? Its a condition that arises when people are in large groups. Everyone expects everyone else to make the first move. Happens a lot, I see it taking tests, hell I fall into it (don't want to be the first one out so you wait for someone else to leave first )...They could still do it with half a dozen guys...

Never underestimate your enemy. When you do that you're in deep trouble! Always imagine your enemy as 400x bigger than you are...

Also don't forget that the airliner isn't Al Qaeda's only weapon.

They excel in other forms of terrorism as well. 1 dirty bomb onboard a Cessna could mean doom for thousands of people. You just never know.

This is why it's critical for us to go after terrorism wherever it is Leo, Brazil doesn't face this threat- and that's the simple truth.

It's fairly easy to launch a terror attack unexpectadly.

Just a while back a bunch of guys put a barrel of pepper spray behind the benches at a Boston Celtics basketball game.

What if that had been VX?

You just never know what they could do with an airplane. There's also the threat of using crop dusters to spray chemical weapons over poppulated areas.

We do need SAMs, IMO they're vital nowadays.........
