I was doing some research on US Naval Carriers and realized that the boys at EA got the Wasp all wrong.

It appears to be modeled (shape and graphics) after the CV-18 pre-1955. As most of you know, all objects in FA are post 1956.

The particulars:

The CV-18 USS Wasp was completed and commissioned in 1943, deployed in the WESPAC theator to fight against Imperial Japan's forces during WWII. OK, the flight deck is correct for this, as the Wasp was an Essex Class Carrier with straight sided flight deck. Altho, the bow is wrong for this era. It was an open bow, but the bow of the Wasp in FA is the newer hurricane bow. And I can't find a photo that shows the starboard elevator near the stern.

In 1952, the Wasp was re-designated CVA-18.

!955, Wasp underwent reconstruction of it's flight deck. The wooden decking was replaced with a new angled steel deck. If you draw a line from the port stern of the flight deck straight up to the outside edge of the port elevator, you would get an idea of the modification. Again, since all objects and such are post 1956, why didn't they get the deck right on the Wasp? I did find a photo of her after the modifications and in it that starboard elevator does appear near the stern. Also, it had helos on deck and no VTOL's

In 1956, the Wasp was re-designate as an ASW (Anti Sub Warfair) carrier, CVS-18.

Lastly, for those of you who might be interested in building missions/camps that are historically accurate. the Wasp was decommissioned in 1972 and sold for scrap in 1973. I noticed that in the stock Kurils 97 campaign, they used the Wasp. How could they use a carrier that isn't even suppose to exist at that date, 1997? DUH

The only Essex calss carrier I can think of off the bat, that is still in existance would be the CV-10 USS Yorktown, perminantly moored in Charlestown, as a floating museum. It also went thru the same mods as the Wasp.

Just thought I'd throw the info out there for any that weren't aware.

The Wasp modeled in FA is that of the amphibious assault ship class, class name Wasp, first commisioned in 1989.

OOppps yeah Zeph has it right I had it wrong. Outy is talking about the old Essex class and the Wasp in FA is the amphibious assault with AV-8s.

Still a good amount of research for anyone who wants to make an Essex.
