We've certianly come a long way since the F-4. That JSF looks awesome.

But I still don't like the idea of putting that thing in the A-10s role.

For a tin can it's pretty well electrified. Good when that little 7.62MM small arms hits it and starts leaking fuel you'll get electrified too!

Cent, I am not sure that you or Da Big really understand how the F-35 is going to be used... It is NOT a 'lay down' bomber like the A-10.. It will do the A-10s job, but not the same way... It will do it from standoff position, with new hypersonic anti tank weapons and extended range JDAMs that have glide wings, plus EJSOW (extended JSOW) with smart munition warheads. A single F-35 will be able to take out an entire armored group... (I can never remerber if the battallion or the company is smaller, I think its the company... it can take out the smalelr unit of vehicles unassisted)...

No more strafing runs down into FLAK and Shorad range....

with 3 or 4 LOCASS to each bomb it wont really matter much. The Small Smart Bomb will come 4 per stealthy pod. So 36 or more smart target seeking munitions per plane seems like enough to me. BUT I still feel we should have a close in CAS system, I just dont see any service ponying up the dough for a more or less single mission airframe. There is the very real possibility that the "close in CAS" will be handled by the replacement for the AC-130, using a DEW gun for a sustainable attack on unfriendlies with little collateral damage.

The JSF will have two large internal bays for ATG ordnance and two underwing pylons per wing for heavy loads:

With a possible 250 lb JDAM or something such as the small diameter bomb more ordnance per point can be carried. This payload is larger than what the A-10 typically carries, which is:

Two rocket pods, two Mavericks (now with Lantirn replacing one), and sometimes 4 Mk-82 Slicks. And of course maybe roughly 12 bursts from the gun.

Ya but can the JSF take a 37MM hit and still fly? Probably now. Hell my bet is it would disintegrate. It's equivelent to buying a Jap car over a Chevy.

point is it wont get close enough to get hit by 37mm probly wont even track it

Anything can be tracked if you look hard enough. Hell man that ZSU-23-4 is a sick gun. That'll rip apart a plane like a BB gun through paper...Imagine the JSF as paper...

JSF isn't worthy of the name airplane, simple as that...it's a tiny ass F-16 wannabe suped up with all sorts of crap that only make it more complicated to use...gimme a Viper and a HARM any day over a JS suck and a JDAM...
