I wanted to post this quite some time ago but didnt get to it.
India is going to upgrade 72 of it's MiG-21 bis fighters (depending on how many of them fall out of the sky before they get upgraded) with the FK-04 Kopyo RADAR( Kopyo had been associated with a podded RADAR for the frogfoot series of Sukhoi aircraft so I guess it's safe to assume that Kopyo is a manufaturer/developer rather than the name of the RADAR?) The RADARs are to begin delivery in 2004, and will be capable of providing info for firing guns, rockets, IR and TV guided weapons. The FK-04 has a detection range of 35 miles and a lock on range of 25 miles and will track 8 targets and can engage 2 targets (or at leaste guide 2 missles) at once.

Hi,

The MiG 21 Bison upgrade program is underway, and atleast 1 squadron of the aircraft have been delivered. The aquadron IIRC is the No.3 Cobras.
The plane can carry ther KAB 500Kr TV guided bomb, the R 77, R 73 and the R 27 too, although, I am not sure whether it can carry the long-burn variants. It is supposed to carry the X 59, although this is doubtful.
Check out my lib, it is done there.

Check this out.

LOL and where would a X-59 go on a MiG-21? It seems that the radar of the Bison limits its R-77 long range capability but still they're the best MiG-21s around.

Zeph,

ROTFL is what I did, when I heard about the X59, isnt it almost as big as the plane ? :P
Anyways, could be a simplified version/smaller lesser range thingie.

Also rumours abound about the Kopyo using a Thomson CSF processor.

It doesn't look like there's clearance under the fuselage. And in the Bison walkaround you linked to the KAB-500T is only the guidance section for training- the full bomb down there would be very close to the ground. So an underwing X-59 would be very assymetrical. Maybe Tekon guidance pod and a full fuel tank (to be kept full and used up quickly after the missile is dropped) under the other wing, and an Archer next to the X-59? It's still very dubious but a X-31 Krypton or two may be doable.

If this is true, it has to be the biggest waste of funds I have ever heard of! They should scrap all the Fishbeds and use the funding for spares, upgrade to buy more SU-30MKIs or MiG-29Ks...

Ehhh I think India is spending tons on defence because they want to simply outspend Pakistan until there's no contest between the two. I heard somewhere their goal is 10x what Pakistan spends on defence. If this is true than there may be no shortage of funds for spares and the Sukhois and MiGs. What they really need to get are some advanced trainers though.

The X-59 is the Kh-59 AS-15 Kingbolt, and Kh-59M AS-18 Kazoo. X is the Cyrillic character and it is pronounced with a "Kh" sound whatever that means.

ooooookkkkkk, I think some clarification is in order here. My stuff says the AS-15 as the Kh-55SM Kent cruise missle, and the AS-13 as the Kh-59 Kingbolt and the M version as Kazoo. Just a typo Z man, or has there been a change?

Yeah that should be AS-13 Kingbolt. Sometimes called "Kingpost".

thanks bud, the Ruskies can be SO odd about naming and classing things(maybee more NATO than Ruskies now that I think about it) that I 'm rarely confident about the names.

Hi,

It is wrong to say that India aims to spend 10 or 20 times more on defence than Pakistan or anyone else, if you ve looked at the map, you'd know that we share a lond border with China, and that we have fought a war with them in 1962. Pakistan is a terrorist scum supporting bug, which has nukes. China is percieved as the longer term starategic threat.
The Western Air Command and SW air command is enough for Pakistan, however, the bulk of the MiGs are kept around to make up the numbers for China.
If I had all my wisghes come true, then the MiG 21s, MiG 23s and even the MiG 27s would be out , replaced by Jags, and Mirage 2000s. But then theres the small matter of the money. :!:
One LCA might equal 4 MiG 21s in effectiveness, but it cant be in four places at a time.

Yes that is true, however it can survive where it is... those 4 Fishbeds will simply be 4 dead ducks. What good is it to have numbers if those numbers are meaningless due to inferior technology and capabilities!?!?!

The MiG-21 is simply to old to invest in! You get much better return out of new aircraft vs upgrade...

It doesnt compute!

Has a MiG ever had a successful air combat encounter? :?: (besides shooting down unarmed planes)

Short answer ... yes.
Do a search for North Korean, or North Vietnamese ACEs.
