MiG-3 didnt get that much exposure in combat in thier deffence during WWII.

How many were actualy produced? Also look at the Yugos they shot down some Croatian planes, Hungarian & Rumanian during the cold war, and also and Airliner I belive it was eighter hit or missed. The migs has a few victories.

All I have to say about this India Fishbed article is it's like putting an airbag in the first version of a Model T. It doesn't matter how much you spend on upgrades it's not going to make any difference in the planes ability. As many have said it's a big waste of time and it makes the plane the most overpriced paperweight in the existence of jet fighters.

In a word, YES!

Vietnam... Mig 17s, 19s, and 21s constantly chewed up USAF strikes with F-105s and F-4s... Even shot down some B-52s...

Not as effective against the USN as they had introduced Topgun by then, however, the USN still lost A-6s and A-7s to Migs over the course of the war in the early 70s...

I was referring to air to air combat, hell any plane can shoot down a B-52 if it really wanted to.

Besides- Vietnam was more than 30 years ago.

Just responding EXACTLY to your statement above..

You should of said within 29 years, then I would have pointed out how effective the Indian Airforce MiG-21s were against the Pakistani F-104s and F-86s in their last major war (Which is why these same MiGs, so many years later now, should be retired..)

MiG-23s and 25s have made kills against American designed aircraft. Even in the Gulf War Iraqi MiG-25s destroyed USN and USAF fighter bombers... And that was an aircraft with an over 25 year old design!

Nope, just the standard laws of combat...

90% of all aircraft shot down never knew the threat was near until it was to late.. A pair of Hornets suffered this result on the first night of the war(And one was piloed by the MIA pilot they are currently searching for in Iraq right now)

In many reect why the Migs have gothen a bad repultaion in the past is because they have been piloted by per-say pourly trained crews who didnt use the aircrafts abilities to thier fullest. I mean look at the countries that use these aircraft, many are 3rd world nations who cannot afford good training for their crews.

Hi,

CAG,
Re the point about MiGs not having enough technology to defend themselves, that is exactly the point of the upgrade, theres a wole new CMDS mounted on the wing roots and a new RWR, new missiles(R 73/77) and new radar.

Re The airbag question, please read my reponse on page 1 of this thread, we need the upgrade as the LCA isnt about to enter service anytime soon, and the MiG 23 MFs, MiG 21 FLs(likely alongwith the MiG 21 Type 69s probably) and our SEAD birds MiG 23BNs are about to be retied in the coming years, so there is a shortfall, The Mirage 2000 is quite expensive to be rought in any sizeable quantity, and the likelyhood of the IAF ever operating US made aircraft is next to zero..so that rules out cheap relatively F 16 lower blocks.
There are also upgrade programs fgor the Jags, and MiG 27s going on.
While Mirage 2000Hs are with reference to upgrades and EW eqpt almost an enigma.
