Da Big, when will you learn to keep your uneducated mouth shut? You know nothing whatsoever of carrier opps, nor what it takes to snap an arresting wire. It has nothing to do with irresponsibility, but you were irresponsible to claim such, with all the information you do NOT have on what happened...

THese wires are constantly checked, but many reasons can lead to a wire snapping, the chief one being an incorrect aircrat weight setting on the arrestor gearing. If the aircraft comes in heavier then indicitated it can snap any wire. The arrestor wire is attached to what is easily described as a giant piston which absorbs the energy of the trap ONLY if it is set correctly.. OR If an aircraft going to fast (and with a #4 wire trap that is possible) or one that hits the cable at the wrong angle due to a fouled approach, or simply the stress was to much for an unknown weak spot in the cable itself. Or the cable could have been substandard...

The list of possibilities is way to long. It also sounds as if the ground crew was injured by the 'snap back' of the parted cable ends as they whipsawed backwards through the deck... But when people are hurt in an aircraft accident it's smart to sit there and shutup until details are made public...

She probably landed too heavy, I would imagine. Damn that ain't fun snapping one of those wires, major damage. Kinda awesome to watch from far away though I mean seeing that snap across the deck. It's like prima-chord, without the explosive.

Was she a 'C' or an 'E'? If the arrestor gear is set to receive a 'C' model Hornet and a 'E' SuperHornet is what is coming aboard... You are going to have quite a few problems...

which is the main reason EVERY carrrier plane has a unique set of lights, so that if (god forbid) all coms fail, the trap crew can ID the plane and set the brakes to a SWAG( I'm sure thay have a book or whatever with presets for each plane) and have SOME chance of recovery. My dad was a machinist's mate on an escort carrier ( NOT A FRIGGIN "JEEP" CARRIER lol ) in the Pacific during WWII and witnessed a wire break, similar results all around even with the relatively slow and light planes of the day.

Was in the Atlantic, it had to be an F/A-18C, or possibly but very unlikely a D, landing.

I have seen a wire break, but only on film. I have never witnessed a live 'snap'...

Kap, they also do not refer to the SH as a Hornet. Its call on the downward leg of the approach to the groove uses an entirely differnt name, and I cant remember what it is!! (lol!)...

But mistakes happen everyday on our carriers. The operators are only human. Hopefully all the procedures in place will continue to keep them at a minimum...

Super Hornets name for the crew is the Rhino. Remember the big contraversy about them using Rhino, people upset because that was the F-4's nickname.

I dare say, if you keep clicking the "Back_up_next" links at the top of the text (at the bottom of the blue area) you will learn everything you ever wanted to know about aressting engines ROFL, page 96 has a description and diagrams of the cables themselves. Hmmm.... apparently the "wires" have a core of rope!! After around page 100 it gets into the barricade system. 291 web-pages total, enjoy! LOL

You are right! That site is the most irritating and most informing site I have ever been on! God, do they know how many potential customers they drive away with that tailer? It pissed me off so bad I guarantee I wont ever buy anything from them!
