i am making a SAR mission including a canadian CH-113A Labrador (used the chinook shape) and I have made the Cimirian Oiler shape into a Canadian Coast Guard vessel, and it has a large helicopter landing platform on the back, but I can't land my helos on the back? Is it possible to do so?? I have checked off, "aircraft can land on object" & "aircraft is a air port" & "aircraft has a runway" but I still cant land a helo on the back, the helo just sinks to the bottom of the ship causing one or the other to be destroyed

CAG has done stuff like this, as I recall it has to be an aircraft carrier but I dont know how he made the game recognize it as such.

see that would be another thing I have to learn to do. i've used the basis of a carrier and tried to change the shape to my vessel, but the game crashes, an im still yet to find out how to attach the control tower to the actual carrier as one object

I have tried this as well (I wanted to land an SH-3 or Harrier on the helo deck of the Iowa), but I think the flags for catapults, starting positions, and tower locations are all embedded in the actual carrier shape files. You can theoretically edit them, but that is hex editing territory, and I don't know much about that stuff.

I am working on a more practical solution to this problem, and I will let you know if I come up with anything usefull.

Simple answer to your delimma...

The answer is NO, unless you know how to shape edit to change the aircraft carrier shape into the ship you want to use...

OR...

You can simply 'trick' the game into using the ship shape as the shadow shape, then use the small runway as the main shape, but again you will have to know how to shape edit that shape so you can turn it into invisilbe polygons so only the shadow shape (the shipp hull) will show up...

And this fix doesnt work at night, as shadow shapes dont showup at night...

Also you cant have the object as a runway and a vessel or vehicle, as this will cause an instant CTD...

I haven't seen any sites dedicated to FA hex-editing, but then I haven't really hunted for them. I would like to learn the trade myself, and I will certainly let you know if I figure anything out.

well i have noticed i can land on roof-tops of sky scrapers and some other types of buildings, would it be possible to somehow transform a building into my vessel shape and have the same effect, or will my game ultimately crash?

A building is a scenery item, and some of the building shapes are indeed 3 dimensional and you can land on them, but there are not enough polygons in building shapes to turn them into ships, unless you want a square ship and again you need to leave the item as a scenery item and not a ship or vehicle to allow it to function as a runway....

As for any sites on the web that show you how to hex edit FA, there are none.

As far as I know I am the only one to do indepth shape editing and again I am the only one to use expanded skin files.

So I am afraid that unless you are already an advanced hex editor, you wont figure the shape files out to well and I dont have the time or patience to teach anyone.

Sorry...

If I wrote it, it would require a seperate chapter on each and every shape in use in FA, as each shape adheres to its own rules when it comes to polygon shape, count, visibility, and skin locations...

Another words, you would go blind reading it...

lol No kidding! For that much work, it would prob. cost a thousand bucks or so. Take if from me, CAG is right. Except for certain small portions, Hex editing is really weird and twitchy, and it's best to just try it out, and learn it on your own, rather than asking anyone for help.
