It all depends on what the mission is and what I want to accomplish in order to make the mission fun (as opposed to realistic).
I just modified the Ukraine mission 'Stealthy Ivan'. Originally, the mission had a stealthy Su-37 sneak up and attack the carrier while you defend yourself from Su-27s shooting at you after launching from the carrier. Somewhere from US Navy Fighters to Fighters Anthology, the Su-37 disappeared and was replaced with the Su-35.
Allowing the carrier to defend itself makes the mission boring. So, to counter this, I increased the strike force attacking the carrier, changed the storyline to say that the enemy is testing a new jammer (reflecting current events), and made the ship's defense system inactive. Lastly, the player's (and wingman's) aircraft has its radar disabled (command line: hardpoint 2 0 <--location of radar on my version of F/A-18C).
